Letter: No Spraying signs worth the cost and effort

By Wendy Butler Burt
Melson Ridge

I read with great sympathy Marie Freeman's article about the indiscriminate pesticide spraying on her Independence Ridge roadside. It is my experience that both the county and the state road crews' wholesale use of roadside herbicides is careless and often unnecessary. (And don't get me started on their overly enthusiastic use of "roadside tree mutilators" to shred trees & shrubs.) And, in some cases, particularly near waterways, the road crew's spraying is contrary to use/label directions for the herbicides being applied. In other words, the way the hericide is being used is against federal law. This also applies to how the chemical is being used in windy weather.

I, too, am an organic gardener, avid birder, and my husband maintains several beehives -- all activities that stand to be damaged or destroyed by the use of roadside herbicide applications. Our property is at the end of a county road and we have posted a "no spraying" sign for years. The sign has been respected by the county road crews and my magistrate knows well how strongly I feel about the use of pesticides on our roadways.

As long as road crews in Adair County ascribe to wholesale use of dangerous roadside chemicals, homeowners need to protect their property by erecting "no spraying" signs -- the cost and effort is worth it to protect your gardens, your ornamental plants, and your wildlife.

Letter: Rockhouse/Rockhouse Bottom

Jacky Pyles writes:
Small point that I think needs bringing up. The Rockhouse near Creelsboro is not Rockhouse Bottom. Rockhouse Bottom is within the big loop that the river makes at the bottom/left of Russell County on the map, so named because of it's proximity to the Rockhouse. Rockhouse Bottom used to be part of Cumberland County but was moved to Russell County because of the great difficulty getting to Burkesville back in the 19th century.

Submissions open for $250M from Cleaner Water Program

From Crystal Staley/Logan Fogle

Frankfort, KY - On Thursday, Gov. Beshear also announced an additional $250 million in funding for his Cleaner Water Program and asked local utilities to submit projects for the second round of funding.

"These funds build on the $250 million appropriated last year to deliver quality, clean drinking water to Kentuckians and maintain our sewer systems," Gov. Beshear said. "Investing in our water infrastructure is a fundamental way we are building a better Kentucky by improving the wellbeing of our people while we fuel our record-breaking economic momentum."

Starting July 21, water resource coordinators, representing Kentucky's 15 Area Development Districts (ADDs) and Area Water Management Councils, may submit project profiles through the Water Resource Information System (WRIS) portal to indicate interest in funding from the Cleaner Water Program. Eligible government agencies, such as city-owned water or sewer utilities, water commissions, water and sewer districts and water associations, may collaborate with a coordinator and council to submit a project. There are 713 public drinking water and wastewater utilities in Kentucky.

The application process will be ongoing throughout 2022 until all funding is committed. KIA will begin reviewing projects this summer and make awards continuously throughout the year. All grant awardees must obligate the funds by December 31, 2024.

Letter: County Spraying

By Marie Freeman

On my road today even with the wind the county sprayed in front of my house herbicide. I was in the backyard working on my tomato plants and I thought what is that smell. So I walked around the front of the house and they went down the road with the tank truck. It was so extreme I couldn't even stand in my yard and catch my breath!

And now tonight my tomato plants are showing signs of herbicide damage. After researching online I'm under the impression that I shouldn't even eat my fruit now after months of work growing organically. The smell was so bad I couldn't even stand outside. I could taste it in my mouth!

Is anyone else in the county experiencing this? Years ago I said not to spray, after talking to the magistrate I'm under the impression that I have to spend at least $50 posting signs to protect my property.
