ACSO: Holiday traffic enforcement with a twist

By Sheriff Josh Brockman
Adair County Sheriff's Office

Over the past week, patrols have been stepped up, with deputies focusing on aggressive driving, impaired driving, and seatbelt usage for the busy week before Independence Day.

The Adair County Sheriff's Office also teamed up with TJ Health Columbia as they sponsored a community project. Drivers that were stopped for seatbelt violations were asked to buckle up and be safe, and then were met with a 50 dollar gift card for gas instead of a citation.

We are thankful that Mr. Randy Burns with the T.J. Community Mission Foundation reached out to us to help with this project. With soaring gas prices the cards came in quite handy, and getting drivers to buckle up was even better. TJ Health sponsored $1,000 worth of gift cards.

Carol Perkins: The Front Room

Previous Column: Father's Day

By Carol Perkins

In the 1940s and 1950s (and before), the "front room" of a house was for daily living and the parlor was for company. That's what I remember about my grandmother's house. The parlor was for the preacher, relatives who had not visited in years, and for special occasions. The parlor seemed so distant from the rest of the house because it was not connected to any other room. How spooky it was!

The front room, as we called it, was overflowing with furniture. Add the wood stove sat very close to the middle of the room, and it is a wonder if anyone could have survived when the fire was roaring. There was a "big" bed in one corner and a twin bed in the other, plus a chest for the TV, a couch, and an easy chair (recliner). A dresser against one wall finished the decor. I can hear the antique shelf clock ticking during the night when I grew homesick in the feather bed.

CU: Hopkins addresses Campbellsville Chamber of Commerce

By Gerard Flanagan

Campbellsville, KY - Though Dr. Joseph Hopkins has been on the job as Campbellsville University's 12th president for a little more than four months, he has become certain of one thing: the dedication of the Campbellsville and Taylor County communities to Campbellsville University throughout her rich 116-year history.

Hopkins spoke to members of the Campbellsville-Taylor County Chamber of Commerce at its monthly luncheon in the university's Badgett Academic Support Center (BASC) Banquet Hall.

"On Feb. 1, 2022, I stepped into a brilliant opportunity and was welcomed into a great family--this community," Hopkins told the chamber members.

Kentucky Grown Cut Flower Month celebrated in July

From Kirk Hilbrecht

Frankfort, KY - Fresh flowers can brighten up any summer day by bringing a little bit of the outside, inside. This month, the Kentucky Department of Agriculture and the Kentucky Horticulture Council (KHC) celebrate the third annual Kentucky Grown Cut Flower Month.

"Flowers grown in Kentucky offer just a piece of what makes Kentucky beautiful," Commissioner of Agriculture Dr. Ryan Quarles said. "Bringing that beauty inside your home, your business, or adding fresh cut flowers as the centerpiece to your summer events celebrates what Kentucky's farmer-florists provide for consumers. You can find a variety of summer flowers at your local farmers' markets or by visiting a local flower farm."
