Phillip Coffey - Mid-summer Blaze

MID-SUMMER BLAZE - By Phillip Coffey

Long before the steep ridges discovery of WD-40, way back in the Western Adair County forested hills.
Lying in a hot, stuffy upstairs bedroom, cranking the tiny oscillating fan with the right forefinger between bars.
A 'hum' in the humid, sweltering heat until after striking the metal fan swiftly between the bars umpteen times.
Just being in the room with no insulation, lying in the handed -down bed in Summers worked up dripping sweat.

But early the next morning the birds would be singing joyfully outside the southern window with pride.
Take a fleeting peak out the window, such a beautiful scene - not matched by anything I have ever since seen.
My heroic father downstairs cooking up heavily peppered sausage and gravy and of course homemade biscuits -- hit the floor, quickly.
Long gone are the hot upstairs nights starting up such things, but memories still linger of the mid-summer blaze.

Tommy Druen: My wife is a genius

Previous Column: Tommy Druen: Lack of Community

By Tommy Druen

My wife, Erin, is a genius.

I could really stop this column right there. Nothing more needs to be said. Game. Set. Match. And, those of you reading this who know her are wondering how I couldn't have recognized that sooner, be not troubled. Truth be told, it's something I've been aware of for more than 22 years. It's just that a recent decision of hers illustrated the point even more.

About two weeks ago, I came home from work and saw two cardboard packages at my front door. This was not surprising. While the economy may be taking a dip, I assure you the Druen household keeps Amazon in the black. (An aside, but one of my wife's other genius ideas was to sign us up for a standard Amazon monthly delivery of toilet paper. Since that day, we've yet to run out. And as my dad has said, it never goes bad and you'll need it until you leave these earthly bounds!)

These boxes were different though.

Celebrating shouldn't have to jangle the nerves

All fireworks involve noise, but not all fireworks have explosions. In recent years, the push for 'silent fireworks' has focused on the impact of fireworks on both people and animals.

The effects on people are shown in an exponential increase in the number of complaints to police during June and July. Explosions of 150 to 170 decibels can not only cause hearing damage, but can trigger anxiety and panic attacks, not to mention sleep deprivation.
