Letter: Lonestar tick can cause Alpha-gal syndrome

Jim Hitt writes:
A word of caution a tick bite from the lonestar tick can change your life style permanently. The ticks are in force this time of year and should be avoided.

I was bitten by one in 2018 and my immune system was compromised to make any beef, pork, or lamb, not eatable without having serious after effects. The condition is known as Alpha-gal, and can be detected through a blood test. There are several degrees of severity in the results of the test. The Alpha-Gal can also include dairy products.

What does all of this mean? Well, for one, you can only eat chicken or any poultry or fish. It may even a good time to consider becoming a vegetarian. Other options may include Acupuncture that have proved successful. --Jim (Breeding KY)
