KY reports highest week ever for new COVID-19 cases

By Crystal Staley/Scottie Ellis

Frankfort, KY - On Monday, Gov. Andy Beshear said Kentucky reported 52,603 new COVID-19 cases last week, the highest weekly total ever by nearly 22,000 cases. The second highest week for new cases was the week ending Sept. 5, 2021, when 30,680 cases were reported.

The Governor also reported the state's highest ever test positivity rate today, 26.33%, and updated Kentuckians on relief efforts for families impacted by Dec. 10-11 tornadoes.

"Omicron continues to burn through the commonwealth, growing at levels we have never seen before. Omicron is significantly more contagious than even the delta variant," said Gov. Beshear. "If it spreads at the rate we are seeing, it is certainly going to fill up our hospitals."

The Governor said he is deploying 445 Kentucky National Guard members to 30 health care facilities to provide support, beginning this week.

Adair Co. Schools: Tracey Pierce announcement

From Dr. Pamela Stephens, Superintendent
Adair County School District

The Adair County Schools family is saddened to report the loss of one of our beloved school family members, Mrs. Tracey Pierce. As a school family, we mourn the loss of Mrs. Tracey and we collectively pray for her family, friends and colleagues in their time of loss.

Mrs. Tracey was such a caring and kind person and her love for her Lord shined through to everyone who had the privilege of knowing or interacting with her. She and her smile will be greatly missed at Adair County High School and in our community. Our staff, students and school community extend our deepest sympathies in such a difficult time.

May God comfort and bless Tracey's family, friends, and loved ones in the coming days.

Last night our school system began implementing our crisis response plan. Counselors will be on site to provide counseling for our students and faculty as needed. We ask parents to please monitor your child's behavior and let us know if you feel that your child needs to speak with someone.

Memories of Concord School, Fairplay, KY, 1909

My father, Earnest Bennett, was born in Fairplay in 1905 and moved to Indianapolis in the 1920s. He continued to love and visit Adair County all of his life. While going through some old photos, I found a picture, dated 1909, made of the Old Concord School, which was south of Fairplay. He and his siblings attended there. At that time the school met in the Old Concord Methodist Church. Later, it moved to a new building nearby and was called Walnut Grove School. Dad identified all of the students with some family information as well. It contains many family names of folks who still reside in Adair County. --LaRue Bennett

By Earnest LaRue Bennett, Sr., from "Notes on My Life"

When my sister was six years old she started to school. I was four and I started with her. In later years I told her that I had to go along to take care of her.

Our first three years of schooling were in the Concord Methodist Church, an old log building in a clearing of a big woods about a mile from our home. There was a door in one end and three small windows on each side. The seats were long benches made of wide boards and no desks. A sheet iron stove made the heat. The benches were moved around the stove where we sat to keep warm. I remember the big girls held me and another little boy on their laps some of the time. He was Crawford McClister, who had lost his mother and he came with his sister and brother. There were 23 pupils. Our first teacher was Miss Minnie Morrison. She boarded with Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Young. The parents of these children hired and paid this teacher's salary. The next year's teacher was Miss Hattie Bradshaw.

During our third year of school, John Bennett gave about one acre of wooded ground for a new school house which was about 1 1/2 miles from our house. My father and most of the other fathers in the area built a new one room school house.

Hunger in Kentucky: Know More, Do More

By Teresa Bright
Adair County Cooperative Extension Service

What does it mean to be hungry? Inspired by the fact that 1 out of every 6 Kentuckians do not always know if they will have enough food, the University of Kentucky Extension is working to empower and mobilize community leaders to learn about, identify, and act on food insecurity issues in their community.

The Hunger in Kentucky: Know More, Do More project will teach community members and leaders how to describe concerns related to food insecurity; how to recognize food insecurity as a community issue; how to identify community resources to address food insecurity; and how to develop one or more goals to address food insecurity in the community. The project is for leaders and members of community organizations and groups who interact with limited-resource families.

Join us at the Adair County Extension Office, 409 Fairground Street, Columbia, KY, at NoonCT on Thursday, January 20, 2022, to examine Hunger in Kentucky and think about ways to help our community and neighbors be more food secure.

For more information, and to register for the program, contact the Adair County Extension Office at 270-384-2317.
