Carol Perkins: Give it UP

Previous Column: Gallagher to the rescue

By Carol Perkins

On our radio show, Susan and I declared the month of January as "Give It Up" month. Whether your time, money, clothes, bad habits, or negative attitude, it's time to give it up.

My first project had more to do with Guy than with me. He needed, in my opinion, to give up items in his closet that he didn't even remember were there. When he left for the post office, I began.

I tackled the top row first. Shirts and more shirts, most in plastic bags from when he once took them to the cleaners, hung in the back. I pulled them out and laid them on the bed. After three trips back and forth, I emptied the top row. Guy came home too soon. "What's all this?" he asked, looking at the pile of his clothes on the bed. "What are you doing in my closet?"

Harper White speaks at Jan 6 vigils in Washington, DC

Harper White, the grandson of Jimmy and Donna Harper of Columbia, KY, and the great grandson of Bruce Montgomery, spoke alongside Members of Congress and other national leaders outside the United States Capitol on Thursday, to commemorate the anniversary of the January 6th attack on the Capitol.

White is currently the Legislative Assistant/Correspondent at the Office of Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro. He was working as a Capitol Hill staffer, in his first full time job after graduating from UK, when the violence unfolded at the Capitol in January, 2021.

"I'll never look at the Capitol without the reminders of that day and the reminders of the fragility of our democracy" said White, who lives on Capitol Hill. "We should not let anyone deter us from the work we do here, not let anyone deter us from doing what's right."

Harper White has been active in politics since well before college. He and his mother, Jamie White, travelled to Washington for the Inauguration back in January of 2009, prompting Ed Waggener to say of then-12-year-old Harper, "Barack Obama will become the 44th President of the United States on Tuesday, January 20, 2009, Harper's turn will be sometime around 2035."

Frankfort, KY - Storm victims in 16 Kentucky counties, including Taylor, now have until January 28, 2022, to apply for Disaster Unemployment Assistance, the Kentucky Office of Unemployment Insurance announced on Friday.

The agency received approval from the U.S. Department of Labor on Friday to extend the deadline for individuals impacted by the storms that occurred overnight on Dec. 10 to apply for DUA benefits.
