Phillip Coffey - Absent of Frills

Absent of Frills by Phillip Coffey
Began making his appointed rounds in the Barber Shop Circuit
Speaking instinctively - his prose to all that would dare listen.
Just showed up to get his ears lowered - 'Breshnev' brows cut.
Some were amused, others aloft - some took up bass fishing.

No Shakespearean delivery - just a hick from the rolling hills of Kentucky.
But oh! the theatrics about mules, cats and various family members.
Tried to speak plainly though not with proper diction - absent of frills.
Up and jumped in Green River - swimming to Louisiana in polar conditions.

KYTC: Nonessential driving still discouraged

By Chuck Wolfe

Frankfort, KY - Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) snow and ice crews are working for a second day to clear roadways left icy and snow covered when a powerful winter storm swept through the state on Thursday.

Skies will be sunny today, but temperatures will remain below freezing, so crews will add calcium chloride to salt to aid in deicing.

Gov. Andy Beshear declared a state of emergency Thursday and urged the public to refrain from all but essential driving. Anyone venturing out should remain alert for slick spots, dramatically reduce driving speed and stay out of the way of KYTC crews and emergency vehicles.

"Dry weather will greatly help us," Gov. Beshear said. "But water from melting ice today can freeze again when temperatures remain frigid. The best advice is to stay off the road. If a trip is essential, exercise extreme caution."

Senate bills on school councils, remote instruction move forward

By Nancy Royden, LRC

Frankfort, KY - With the first week of the 2022 Legislative Session almost over, two education bills related to school councils and remote instruction are advancing in the Kentucky Senate.

On Thursday, the Senate Committee on Education voted 9-1 to pass Senate Bill 1, which calls for local superintendents - rather than school councils - to determine educational curriculum for districts.

Superintendents would still need to consult with the principal and school council beforehand and provide a reasonable review and response period for stakeholders in accordance with local policy.

The committee also passed Senate Bill 25, which would provide up to 10 days of remote instruction per school for the 2021-2022 academic year. It would also temporarily revise retirement reemployment provisions until June 30. The legislation passed on a 10-0 vote.

Both measures now head to the full Senate for consideration.

Tennis: Mendoza and Erazo to be LWC Interim Head Coaches

By Christopher Coombs

Gema Mendoza and Camilo Erazo have been tabbed to serve as the Lindsey Wilson Tennis Interim Head Coaches, athletics director Willis Pooler announced on Friday.

"Promoting Gema Mendoza and Camilo Erazo to the roles of interim head women's and men's tennis coach is a great short-term plan for our athletics department," Pooler said. "They are both very familiar with our tennis program and student-athletes. It will also allow our athletes to have a head coach that is focused specifically on their team. I look forward to working with them this spring and helping them lead successful programs."

The pair will split duties over the program with Erazo focusing on the men's side and Mendoza taking over the reins of the women's program. Erazo is a former LWC men's tennis student-athletes and Mendoza has served as an LWC tennis graduate assistant and has a strong collegiate tennis resume.

Brandy Held's mini-Hereford brings back memories

By Michael Watson

Seeing cattle in the snow and bitter cold always takes me back to the mid-1970s winters. We still had beef cattle and my twice daily job was to bundle up, head to the barn and feed the cattle.

This morning, searching for a piece of history, I rediscovered this article from an old Adair County News, 6 November 1941, on "Youthful Stock Raisers". There are several names here that readers will remember:
Youthful Stock Raisers Exhibit Calves at Show:
Members of the 4-H, future Farmers and Utopia Clubs are showing calves at the Louisville 20th Annual Fat Cattle Show, which is now being held at the Bourbon Stock Yards. Eighteen calves, which will be sold at auction on Friday, were taken to Louisville on Tuesday. The following exhibited: John S. Collins, Glensfork; Frances Cumbaa, Montpelier; Ralph Reece, Montpelier; Bert Antle, Jr., Garlin; Kenneth Ballou, Garlin; Doris Browning, Columbia; Jean and Kathleen Dohoney, Columbia; Clyde and Carl Hutchison, Zion; Mary and Tommy Murrell, Columbia; and Shirley Glasgow, Milltown.

This snow like those of my childhood

By Lanny Nunn

This snow is like what we used to have when we were children - 4 to 5 inches of good ole soft snow.

If makes me homesick wanting to be a child again; no responsibilities, just wanting to play all day and be with friends. No school, waxing your best sled, wrapping up in good warm clothes and up and down the hills until you just run out of energy.

Motorists are still advised to avoid travel Friday morning

The reports are the same on Friday morning from several transportation districts in central and southern Kentucky--motorists are still advised to avoid travel.

Crews are working hard to clear yesterday's snow, and nearly all area roads will still be covered or partially covered with slick and compacted snow, and possibly ice, until temperatures rise enough for road treatments to become effective.

In the meantime, emergency response and towing resources continue to be in high demand. Motorists are advised to avoid travel if possible. Motorists that have to be out should pack emergency supplies and adjust driving behavior by slowing down and leaving plenty of space between vehicles.

Remember not to call 911 or dispatch centers for travel conditions. State-wide road conditions are available at goky.ky.gov.
