Walk About, Chapter Seven

Darlene Franklin-Campbell's new novel, Walk About, is being posted online chapter-by-chapter, for people to read for free. Previous Chapter: Walk About, Chapter Six, or start at the beginning: Walk About: Chapter One.

Chapter Seven

By Darlene Franklin-Campbell

Rosie walked through the department store, keeping her hands laid over her obviously pregnant stomach and grimacing in pain every few minutes. "Excuse me," she said, accidentally bumping into someone.

Out of the corner of her eye she saw Clyde, wearing cut-offs, a ball cap, a sweat shirt and a college backpack walk past her. Clyde, who looked a decade younger than she actually was, had entered as unnoticed as any college student would have.

"Time to go to work," Rosie whispered to herself, her heart pounding so hard that she looked to see if it was noticeable through her dress. Her sisters had said, "Act, but be yourself." How did a person act and still be herself? If she were being herself then it wouldn't be an act, would it? Oh, well, she had never had a baby but she had been with her friend, Shayla, when her baby was born, so she would pretend to be Shayla.

She waited until she was near the center of the store then squeezed the water bottle that was hidden up her dress. Water splashed onto the floor at her feet, splattering an elderly couple that was standing nearby.

"Oh, my water's broke!" She said loudly. "My water's broke. I think the baby's coming. Help me, somebody help me. Oh, oh!"

Football: Wright named LWC Offensive Coordinator

By Christopher Coombs

Matt Wright has been named Lindsey Wilson Football's Offensive Coordinator, head coach Phil Kleckler announced on Monday.

"I would first like to thank President Dr. William T. Luckey Jr., Executive Vice President Dean Adams, Athletics Director Willis Pooler, and Coach Kleckler for this opportunity as there has always been a special place in my heart for Lindsey Wilson College," Wright said. "This is where I got my start in college coaching and I have had the pleasure to learn from a lot of great coaches like Chris Oliver, Brian Foos, and Wes Satterfield over the past nine years of my career."

Wright is familiar with the Lindsey Wilson football program after having been a part of the staff for three seasons from 2014-16 as an assistant coach. His primary role with the team then was working with the tight ends as well as the strength and conditioning coach and an assistant recruiting coordinator.

He helped guide the Blue Raiders to three consecutive trips to the NAIA Football Championship Series (2014, 2015, 2016) behind offenses that put up more than 40 points per game. Wright coached then tight end and now LWC football assistant coach Emilio Gonzalez to first-team all-conference honors twice.

COVID-19 News Brief & Vaccination Update 1/3/2022

By Sam Price
Lake Cumberland District Health Department

We are seeing a surge of cases, likely due to the Omicron variant that has been identified in the state. While it seems it is highly transmissible, vaccination is still the best strategy to protect yourself and your families from serious illness and possible hospitalization. If you have not yet received your vaccination, please consider getting it now. Also, remember that boosters are strongly recommended for everyone after 6 months.

Today is our highest reported daily total for the district since September 27. This is likely partly due to a backlog of reporting from the holidays, however, cases are definitely increasing.

Of today's 383 reported cases, 291 (76%) were unvaccinated and 57 of today's cases (15%) were in individuals 18 years of age or younger. Please take the necessary precautions to protect yourself and your loved ones. Consider getting the vaccine if you are eligible and haven't, and wear a mask when in indoor settings where there are large crowds.

Statewide Testing Positivity Rate: 20.72%.
