Phillip Coffey: Rabbit Ranch

RABBIT RANCH - by Phillip Coffey
Traveling to "Rabbit Ranch" strolling alongside slowly with my loving, sweet darling.
'No axes to grind' about others -steep hillsides roamed by generations of my forefathers.
East facing slopes - eroded drainages and loose soil saturated - full of rainwater.
Hidden fissures in the landscape among the leaves-slipped, fell short of an impoundment.

Listen, troubled souls- tired of taking on reality- 'take off' to the forest in Southern Kentucky.
Angelic Gabriel, 'please spare blowing the judgmental trumpet just for a 'country' minute.'
Just let me return briefly in my imagination to my youth to the spring fed hills of Adair County.
Surely 'Paradise would be lost' without Ginseng to search with no deciduous forest in it.

Epicurean Kentuckian: still giving thanks

2021-11-26 - Shelbyville, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener.
It's the day after Thanksgiving yet the gatherings and great meals continue. Instead of turkey, today we enjoyed baked ham, dressing, green beans, real mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce and the star of the show - my Mom Geniece Marcum's cheesy lima bean casserole. Dad, Earl Reid, absolutely detested casseroles and didn't didn't want anything to do with mixing up his foods. Yet everyone else in the family enjoyed this dish and also her grits casserole and requested them every holiday. - LW

Letter: Thank You from the family of Pat Darnell

Anthony Darnell writes:
On this Thanksgiving, the family of Pat Darnell would like to say “thank you” for every visit, call, text or message, prayer, and act of kindness displayed to our family during our time of loss.

The overwhelming support from Columbia and surrounding communities has been surreal. Losing our Wife, Mother, Nana, and friend has been difficult, but your prayers and kind words have surely been felt by our family. Special “Thank You” to the staff at Stotts-Phelps McQueary Funeral Home and Taylor County Hospital. Thank you to Columbia Magazine for posting the obituary and photo of mom.

We would only ask that the entire community honor Pat by living life each day with a big smile on your face, and by showing kindness and love to everyone, especially your family, just like Pat did. Again, thank you.

Carol Perkins: Black Friday traditions

Previous Column: Life's Chapters, Two - In Town

By Carol Perkins

Black Friday. Akin to death? Do you take your life into your hands when you participate in the mad dash to buy a TV for fifty dollars less than usual? Do you risk being attacked by ruthless shoppers who have no boundaries to "get there first?" I have put in my time in malls over the years, long before shopping on Friday was called "Black."

The day after Thanksgiving was an annual shopping trip for my daughter and me. Usually, my friend Judy went with us. Louisville was our preferred destination, but after Carla was grown and living in Nashville, we met her there to shop in new territory. For a few years toward the end of our tradition, we left home after the dishes were washed Thanksgiving night, drove to Louisville, and were in line for the stores to open.

Kentucky Color: Great Wooded South Thanksgiving

By Billy Joe Fudge

Growing up in the Great Wooded South, although difficult and challenging in many ways, was most certainly utopian in totality. Usually by Thanksgiving the tobacco was stripped, the smokehouse was heavy ladened with hams, middlings and jowl and leaves were carpeting the woodland floor. On Thanksgiving morning after the milking and chores were done and while my Momma and Ma Fudge were preparing the Thanksgiving feast, if the skies were clear and the frost looked like a light snow then it was time to load up the bird dogs to seek out several coveys of quail that might be feeding on a frigid, late fall morning. However, should it be a cool, damp and drizzling morning, then it was a perfect time to head to the woods with our ol' squirrel dog. I can hear my Dad saying "the squirrels will be sticking tight to the bark today". Of course that meant that the tree up which Brownie was barking would most likely be where the squirrel would be located. In dryer, blustery weather squirrels had a tendency to travel across the tree tops to their favorite hollow tree to hide.

After returning home with the bounty, it was time to either skin the squirrels or clean the quail and put them in saltwater to soak overnight in preparation for breakfast on Sunday morning. Oh and yes, it was now time for Pa Fudge to ask the blessing and chow down on either Turkey and dressing, country ham or floured tenderloin fried brown and tender and all the fixings.

Thankful for the memories, thankful for my family and today's gathering and bounty, and thankful for the blessings of God upon us all, each and every day going forward!
