Synergy Food Group welcomed to Columbia location

By Linda Waggener

Recognizing opportunities and writing grant applications are works that can drive persons to drink with all the minute details involved in the long process.

However, when things finally comes into clear focus, final paperwork is accepted and the grant is won, the result is so very, very sweet.

That's the feeling that pervaded among the 50 or so smiling attendees at Tuesdays ceremony announcing the CDBG grant, through the Lake Cumberland Area Development District, which has allowed the City of Columbia, under the leadership of Mayor Pam Hoots, to become owner of the Majestic Yacht property.

KSP offering Black Friday Sale on Trooper Teddy Bears

By Captain Paul Blanton

Frankfort, KY - The Kentucky State Police (KSP) will host their annual Black Friday sale to raise funds for the Trooper Teddy Bear program, which is designed to develop trust between law enforcement and children. The bears will go on sale at trooperteddy.square.site at 8amET on Thanksgiving Day, November 25, 2021. Bears will be $15, through midnight on Friday, November 26.

All proceeds from the sale will benefit the outreach program, allowing troopers to provide teddy bears to children who have been in traumatic situations such as car crashes, child sexual abuse cases or dealing with a terminal illness.

"As a trooper, it tugs at your heart to see a child visibly upset and shaken," says KSP Commissioner Phillip Burnett, Jr. "These children are often innocent victims of a crime and giving a bear to them provides comfort while building much needed trust."

Remember fire safety during family celebrations

By Sherelle Roberts-Pierre

Frankfort, KY - The Kentucky Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction Division of Fire Prevention is urging Kentuckians to stay fire-safe on the most dangerous cooking day of the year--Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving Day is the #1 day for cooking fires, according to the National Fire Protection Association. In 2020, more than 1,600 home cooking fires occurred on the holiday. Here are a few safety tips to keep your home from becoming a statistic:

Cook with Caution
  • Don't cook and drink. If you have consumed alcohol, don't use the stove or stovetop.
  • Don't cook if you are sleepy.
  • Stay in the kitchen. If you leave the kitchen even for a short period of time, turn off the stove.
  • Use a timer, so you do not forget that you are cooking.
  • Keep anything that can catch fire away from your stovetop, including oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging, towels, curtains and even the sleeves of your clothing.
  • Keep children at least three feet away from the stove or cooking surfaces.
