Center of US population is little town in MO

2021-11-16 - Missouri - Photo from US Census.
As promised, the U.S. Census Bureau has calculated the center of population for the United States based on the 2020 Census population of 331.4 million. The center is near Hartville, a town of about 600 people in central southern Missouri.

Every 10 years, since the first census in 1790, the Census Bureau has calculated the “center of population,” which is a point at where an imaginary, flat, weightless and rigid map of the United States would balance perfectly if everyone were of identical weight.

This point represents the average location of where people in the United States live. Based on the 2020 Census redistricting data released September 16, the center of the population (as of Census Day, April 1, 2020) is located about 15 miles from Hartville.

Kentucky hemp application portal now open

By Sean Southard

Frankfort, KY - The window to apply for the Kentucky Department of Agriculture's 2022 hemp licensing program is now open, Agriculture Commissioner Dr. Ryan Quarles has announced.

"The nation's hemp industry continues to face challenging headwinds, including continued regulatory inaction by the Food and Drug Administration toward cannabinoids," Commissioner Quarles said. "As we enter the ninth growing season, we encourage all hemp growers and processors to carefully consider all of the factors in this industry."

The Kentucky Department of Agriculture (KDA), which administers Kentucky's hemp licensing program, is hosting an online application portal on its hemp webpage, kyagr.com/hemp. Grower applications, including renewals, must be submitted by March 15, 2022. New processor/handler applications may be submitted year-round. Annual processor/handler license renewals must be submitted by Dec. 31.

Governor: New KY COVID-19 cases hitting a plateau

Governor, leading Kentucky health care organizations encourage parents, caregivers to vaccinate children 5 and older

By Crystal Staley/Scottie Ellis

Frankfort, KY - On Monday, Gov. Andy Beshear said new COVID-19 cases in Kentucky appear to be hitting a plateau, after declining for seven weeks in a row.

"The top line here is it does look like we've plateaued. That's not a reason to think that there is another surge," said Gov. Beshear. "It looks like we have plateaued on the positivity rate at about 5.5%. We are still at a very serious level."

In Kentucky, children make up 25%-30% of all new COVID-19 cases.

COVID-19 vaccines are safe for this age group. During the Pfizer vaccine clinical trials, there were no serious side effects among any of the study participants. The vaccine was found to be 90.7% effective in preventing symptomatic COVID-19 for this age group.

Daryl Farris Bartley, 77, Metcalfe County, KY

Daryl Farris Bartley, age 77, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 14, 2021, after a long illness.

Bartley was a husband. A father, a grandfather, and a great grandfather. A son, a brother, an uncle, and a friend. A farmer, a horseman, a steward, and a provider. If you want to know what kind of man he was, just look to his name. "Daryl" is an old English aphorism meaning "dearly loved." Farris is a bygone British adage for "iron strong." And Bartley is a classic Scottish expression for "meadow." Mix those three things together and you have a strong, salt-of-the earth man who was loved by his family and friends.
