2021-11-11 - Adair Co., KY - Photo by Veronica Arnold.
Veronica writes, "Winds whipping up from the south. Rain coming in from the west. Grey clouds above. Trees of yellow and red. It is beautiful as it a bit gloomy. The grey skies and winds make it overbearing. But the bright colors on the trees and the wind chimes dancing make it cozy. Thankful to have warm shelter inside."

Recent accidents highlight need for hunting safety

By Mike Keltner, Director
Adair Co. Emergency Management

Adair County responders have been requested at two serious hunting accidents (arrow injury and gunshot wound) in the past few weeks. Many accidents can be easily avoided! I hope by reviewing the included tree stand fall infographic produced by the National Deer Association and the hunting checklist below, provided by Project Child Safe, an error may be avoided. Be safe!

Hunting Checklist for Families
Hunting is a rich tradition, often passed down from family members to the next generation. The time may come when it's your turn to introduce your children to this unique, exciting experience. Start by sharing stories about exploring the outdoors, outsmarting the game or even your first hunt; and please remember that safety should be part of every conversation about hunting and firearm use. The most important part of sharing this experience with your loved ones is ensuring they understand that proper precautions and responsible use of firearms can help make every hunting trip safe, fun and memorable.

Don't know where to start? Use the following checklist as your guide:

May 26, 1945: Adair Honor Roll Board Dedication

By Mike Watson

The following article from the May 30, 1945, edition of the Adair County News reported on the dedication of the Adair County Honor Roll Board:

On Saturday afternoon the Honor Roll of Adair County men and women of World War II was dedicated with appropriate services. The North and West sides of the Square were cleared for the large crowd which had assembled to do the honor to the more than 1,300 Adair Countians whose names appear on the Board. A platform was erected on the Court House lawn for the speakers and the flower-covered glass-enclosed Honor Board, which is to be permanently affixed to the wall of the Court House hall, was prominently displayed.

After a parade by the Louisville Boy Scout Band, Rev. L.R. Fugit, pastor of the Columbia Christian Church, and Master of Ceremonies, introduced Rev. R.E. Reeves, pastor of the Columbia Presbyterian Church, who offered the invocation.

Brief remarks thanking all who had assisted in making the occasion possible and explaining the purpose and manner of purchase of the Board were made by L.R. Fugit and W.E. Harris, who had served with Mrs. G.R. Reed, Mrs. J.P. Scruggs, and Mrs. Rollin Cundiff as an Honor Board committee. An offering to complete a deficit in payment for the Board was then taken by the Local Scout Troops.

Letter: Dark spots on leaves caused by fungus

Billy Joe Fudge writes:
I believe it is a fungus I always called "leaf spot". It is known as Tubakia leaf blotch in some circles. Fortunately, it does no real damage to the leaves until late in the growing season when the leaves are going to shortly be turning colors and falling off anyway.
