Virginia Cherry, 95, Russell County, KY (1926-2021)

Lois Virginia Cherry was born October 3, 1926, in Macon County, Tennessee, the daughter of the late Pattie Dickens Mitchell and Henry Howard Mitchell. On June 8, 1943 she married Corporal Donnie Cherry who served in the U.S. Army during WWII and fought at Omaha Beach and in the Battle of the Bulge.

After the war, they made their home in Lafayette, TN before moving to Russell Springs in the summer of 1953. After Donnie's death in 1982, Virginia cared for pre-school children in her home for several years. This was something she enjoyed along with working in her flowers and cooking for her family. She loved her grandchildren and would always say how proud she was of them, and that they were the "smartest of all grandchildren". She was a member of the Russell Springs Christian Church for many years.

Homecoming brings LWC Class of 2020 back to campus

By Venus Popplewell

When Waverly Williams received the news that she would have the opportunity to celebrate her graduation from LWC in-person, she felt grateful to be able to close out an important chapter in her academic journey.

"Even though we had other opportunities to celebrate and be recognized, this is what our class really needed," said Williams, a business administration graduate from Elizabethtown, Kentucky. "...the chance to cross the stage and have the big moment we've all dreamed of. It's a closure moment and it makes the accomplishment feel more real."

LWC 111th and 112th Commencement Ceremonies
The ceremony -- which honored the LWC Class of 2020 graduates -- took place as a part of 2021 Homecoming.

Some more Adair County spiders

Click "Read More" to see the whole article with photo

By Matt Downen, PhD

Last year I wrote a small blurb on Adair Spiders for October and would like to contribute another one.

Yellow Garden Spider: Many people see these large orbweavers around this time of year. They have many common names, but their scientific name is Argiope (pronounced Ar-GUY-oh-pee). Female spiders are often larger than males (which is really striking in this picture). The zigzag shape in their web is called a stabilimentum. The purpose of the stabilimentum is debated--it might be to attract insect prey, it might make it more visible to keep birds from flying into the web, or it might camouflage the spider from predators.

COVID-19 Cases declining as more Kentuckians get vaccinated

By Crystal Staley/Scottie Ellis

Frankfort, KY - On Monday, October 4, 2021, Gov. Andy Beshear said weekly COVID-19 cases and test positivity rates, as well as COVID-19 hospitalizations, ICU admittances, ventilator uses and orders for monoclonal antibody treatments in the commonwealth, are declining due to more Kentuckians getting vaccinated and masking up indoors.

While declining cases are encouraging, Gov. Beshear and health care leaders at King's Daughters Medical Center (KDMC) in Ashland said Kentuckians need to stay vigilant about protecting themselves from the virus days after the United States' COVID-19 death toll surpassed 700,000.

"Overall, today's report is positive in the trends, but what is still really hard is the loss of life we continue to see, and that loss being preventable," said Gov. Beshear. "This is going to be a scar that the American people carry with us moving forward. That's why we need to make sure the cases are not only dropping, but dropping at a significant rate. We need to accelerate the trend."

By Naitore Djigbenou/Chuck Wolfe

Frankfort, KY - The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) is issuing an "Antler Alert" to remind motorists that it's peak season for highway collisions involving deer and other wildlife on the move.

"Shorter days and cooler nights, October through December, bring a noticeable increase in highway collisions involving deer," KYTC Secretary Jim Gray said. "Drivers should be vigilant at all times, but the autumn presents a special challenge for drivers, with deer and other wildlife increasingly on the move, often at night."
