LWC to celebrate 89th Homecoming, Class of 2020 in-person commencement

Some event times have changed or canceled since the printed schedule was released. Please go to www.lindsey.edu/homecoming for updated information.

By Venus Popplewell

An in-person commencement ceremony will be held to recognize the members of the Class of 2020 during Lindsey Wilson College's 89th homecoming weekend, Oct. 1 and 2.

The in-person commencement ceremony is for all students who graduated in 2020 whose final year at LWC was interrupted by the coronavirus pandemic.

"We've experienced an extraordinary year and a half. It is exciting to finally have the opportunity to bring people back to campus and celebrate all the things we have missed, as well as the things we have accomplished," said Lafawn Nettles, who was named LWC Director of Alumni relations last fall.

LWC Homecoming will kick off on Thursday, September 30, with two events: a faculty and staff homecoming reunion cookout at 11amCT, and a pep rally with fireworks at *7:30pmCT. Both events will take place on the campus quadrangle.

Letter: Paw paws

Michael Watson writes:
A beautiful photo of PawPaws. Sad to learn they were poached from the tree in a yard. In the wild may be another matter, but in an occupied space is no better than picking someone else's tomatoes or watermelons.

In decades past, Mr. Hugh Wesley, who lived on Fortune Street near the corner of South High, had pawpaw 'trees' in his side and back yard and he watched them like the proverbial hawk.

As for pronunciation, I always bow to Billy Joe Fudge's intellect. I have never heard anyone call this wonderful southern fruit anything other than 'paw paw' or cat-foot cat-foot.

Electric battery plants coming to Hardin Co.

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - Gov. Andy Beshear, Ford Motor Company and SK Innovation announced the single largest economic development project in the history of the commonwealth on Monday, celebrating a transformative $5.8 billion investment that will create 5,000 jobs and places Kentucky at the forefront of the automotive industry's future.

Ford Motor Co. and SK Innovation will build two electric battery plants in the BlueOvalSK Battery Park in Hardin County, investing a record $5.8 billion. With this announcement, Kentucky shatters every annual economic development record in the books for yearly investment totals and is on pace for its best job-creating year in history. Kentucky workers at BlueOvalSK Battery Park will supply Ford's North American assembly plants with batteries that will power the next generation of Ford and Lincoln electric vehicles. Production of the advance lithium-ion batteries will begin in 2025.

The plants will be built on the 1,551-acre economic development site near Interstate Highway 65 in Glendale and will generate 86 gigawatt hours, which commonwealth officials believe will make Kentucky the nation's largest producer of electric automotive batteries.
