Governor calls Special Legislative Session

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - As COVID-19 cases increase at the fastest growth rate of the pandemic, straining Kentucky hospitals, Gov. Andy Beshear on Saturday called lawmakers to Frankfort next week to extend the pandemic state of emergency, which provides administration and public health officials with the tools and measures needed to slow the spread of the virus and save lives.

A state of emergency clearly continues in the commonwealth, and following a recent Kentucky Supreme Court ruling, the Governor worked with the General Assembly to assess a call for a special session, which will begin in Frankfort at 10amET on Tuesday, September 7, 2021.

The Governor is asking lawmakers to consider legislation to address several topics including: extending the state of emergency until Jan. 15, 2022; setting forth the criteria regarding the Governor's authority to require facial coverings in indoor settings in certain circumstances; providing additional flexibility for school districts; and making an appropriation from the American Rescue Plan Act to support mitigation and prevention activities, such as testing and vaccine distribution.

Letter: Why the chart totals quarantine numbers with case numbers

Matt Pendleton writes:
At first glance a reader is lead to believe that there are 115 cases in our county school system. The actual current positive cases total 29, based on this chart. I believe one case of Covid 19 in our schools is too many, but 29 is much lower than 115 that is listed as a total. Accurate reporting and proper calculations should be provided by our health departments, and clear charting should be provided as well.

Matt, thanks for writing. The schools provide these charts to give an idea of the impact on the school system. It's our understanding that positive or quarantined is effectively the same difference for the schools' attendance numbers--those students will have to be absent either way, and 115 are currently affected. --Pen

Kentucky Color: Hot Grasshopper

By Billy Joe Fudge

On a hot day I spied this grasshopper sitting, or maybe he was standing, in my driveway. I thought maybe he was just resting prior to his next flight on his way to luscious grass just beyond his present position. But then, in nearly the same motion and because of his lack of motion, I wondered if the hot asphalt, scorching sunlight and hot temperatures might have just boiled his cold blooded innards! At any rate, this grasshopper carried me on a trip into my ancient but not so distant past.

Similar to other Great Wooded South lads and an occasional lass during the `50's and `60's, I exploited the vast resource of grasshoppers to tempt lunker Bass, beautiful Bluegill and even an occasional Channel Catfish from any number of Sparks and Harveys Ridge farm ponds. Grasshoppers have been a catalyst to pleasing the palate and putting high quality protein on the table of many who might have only had cornmeal mush to eat for several days.

Emergency prep: we need to prepare to prepare

Emergency preparedness
From Emory Kidd, Metcalfe CountyDirector

Through the rest of the month, we will post suggestions on things to do, things to gather and things to have stored, and of course, you'll need to have a place to keep such items.

The biggest investment that we will suggest is a good, water and fire-proof box for documents and the like.

It can be relatively small or large enough to fit file folders, only you can determine the needs for you and your family.

Phillip Coffey - New Reality

NEW REALITY -- By Phillip Coffey
New reality since I have 'put on' a few extra pounds
All 'fogged up' early - with whatever I may encounter.
Keeping a safe distance from all the world turmoil-bad news.
Sitting on my 'rumpus' - lost hope long ago of climbing the ladder.

Briefly thinking over some of the options in my life not chosen.
Where would I be if I had not changed my thoughtless pattern.
Don't know, but here I be miles from the recently angered ocean
With people I love, at peace with the Son of the Creator.
