Carol Perkins: A patient, patient

Previous Column: Seafood Buffet

By Carol Perkins

For at least five years, I have been avoiding knee replacement surgery. I went the way of shots in the knee, meds for arthritis, and even stem cell replacement therapy, but nothing changed the fact that I was dealing with "bone on bone." It was not going to get better and a replacement was the only answer to the pain and the limp, both of which had become part of my life. A part that I couldn't control.

When I set July 12th as the date for my surgery and Dr. Fee from WKONA as my doctor, I wasn't going to back out. I went for all the pre-op appointments and worked in a trip to Texas before being "laid up." "You won't be down for long," the doctor assured me. "We'll have you walking within hours of the surgery." That sounded good to me, but I wasn't counting on the pain that came with the walking. Pain that I was there until it wasn't.

Dr. Fee asked me the morning after surgery if I thought I could have come home the same day.

Commissioner Quarles on passing of Representative Bam Carney

By Sean Southard

Frankfort, KY - Agriculture Commissioner Ryan Quarles issued the following statement regarding the passing of Representative Bam Carney:
"I just learned about the passing of my former House colleague and friend, Representative Bam Carney," Kentucky Commissioner of Agriculture Ryan Quarles said. "When I was first elected to the House of Representatives, Bam was patient and kind in helping teach me the legislative process and how to best represent my constituents. He knew how to do both well, and was a visitor to my district many times over the years.

"Bam was a fighter. Through his role as chair of the House Education Committee, Bam fought to put the interests of students first. As House Majority Leader, he fought to bring about conservative vision for Kentucky, increase economic opportunities, and make the American dream possible for more Kentuckians. And, in these last few years, he fought tirelessly to get well, get home, and get back to representing his constituents in the halls of Frankfort.

During this difficult time, my thoughts and prayers are with his family and all who called him a friend. He will be missed."

Osborne: Our hearts are broken

Frankfort, KY - House Speaker David Osborne issued the following statement on behalf of the House Majority Caucus:
"Our hearts are broken at the loss of our friend and brother, Bam Carney. Bam was a passionate educator, an outstanding legislator, and a tremendous leader for our Commonwealth. Those who had the privilege of working with Bam knew he led by example and subscribed heavily to the belief that you can do great things if you don't care who gets the credit. As House Education Chair and House Majority Floor Leader, he worked diligently to provide a voice for children in classrooms across our state. His collaborative approach led to the passage of the School Safety and Resiliency Act, bringing focus to both strengthening physical safety and our approach to childhood mental health issues.

"For more than a year and a half Bam fought valiantly to overcome his health issues, all while remaining steadfastly dedicated to the people of his district. While there is great comfort in knowing he is free from the constant pain and struggle, we pray his sons, his mother, and his entire family find comfort in knowing so many join them in mourning the legacy of a good man."
Carney, the Kentucky House Majority Floor Leader, passed away this morning, July 17, 2021, after a long battle with pancreatitis.

LCDHD COVID Weekly Public Information Brief 7/16/2021

By Amy Tomlinson
Lake Cumberland District Health Department

We added 131 new cases this week compared to 78 new cases the week prior. We have 115 active cases today compared to 78 last Thursday. We have 7 hospitalized cases today compared to 10 last Thursday. We experienced 1 COVID-19 related death since last Thursday and reported 1 other death which occurred earlier. Our 7-day-average incidence rate of new cases per 100,000 is 8.94 today compared to 5.32 last Friday. So, all in all, another week of sharp increases.

Again, this week should be a warning that COVID-19 is not over. We saw significant clusters of new cases this week tied to area businesses, church camps, churches, travel, and 1 long-term care facility. So, please take the vaccine. While no vaccine is 100% effective, please note the following local information. Since the vaccine started becoming available (1/5/21), about 97.8% of our area's new cases had taken no doses of the vaccine. Also, of our 113 total deaths since the vaccine started becoming available, only 2 had received their 1st dose of the vaccine and none were fully vaccinated. Also, of our 453 hospitalizations tied to COVID-19 after the vaccine started becoming available, only 20 had received at least 1 dose of the vaccine.

It should be noted, however, that about 17% of our new cases in the last 7 days had taken at least 1 dose of the vaccine. Of our 25 new cases this week that had received at least 1 dose of the vaccine, only 1 is noted as in the hospital. So, the vaccine continues to be very effective in preventing death and severe illness.

Statewide Testing Positivity Rate: 4.04%.

Phillip Coffey: Addled

By Phillip Coffey
Well I have been lately with much excessive thinking
That I probably shouldn't have had the hammer in my hand
When I who is most blessed and slowed down reflexes
Unwisely chose to knock off the fly - sitting on my brow.

The flying, little pest has long flown away - leaving me addled
With a long history of making quick choices I shouldn't have made.
While the contusion on my huge head leaves me half dead.
From this point forward - trying to stay clear - holding only those most dear.

Letter: There Are Other Options for Cats

Joyce Coomer writes:
An ordinance that small animals that are not used for breeding purposes be spayed and neutered. There are a few people in the county who show dogs and according to some show regulations cannot be spayed or neutered. There are a few people who raise dogs for sale so they could be considered kennels.

Alley Cat Allies -- https://www.alleycat.org -- provides information on TNR (Trap, Neuter, Return) at https://www.alleycat.org/resources/trap-neuter-return-ordinances/. They also have much more information about community cats.

Before any overly-restrictive ordinance is even considered, all other options should be explored. - Joyce M. Coomer, 270-384-4495
