Letter: Idea for a Welcome to Columbia sign

Yvonne Kolbenschlag writes:
I am very pleased that a future Eagle Scout has seen the need to replace a shabby old sign on Greensburg Street. Welcoming signs to a city indicate an image of the kind of place the city is. Just as a shabby dirty 'welcome' mat in front of a house door would make one wonder what sort of person lives there, so a shabby dirty sign at a city's entrance gives the same message.

I hope our City Council affirms this future Eagle Scout's most worthy project. Yaaaa!

LWC Basketball 2020-21 Rewind, Part 2

Previous Basketball Rewind: LWC Men's Basketball: 2020-21 Rewind

By Kyle Jackson

The Lindsey Wilson women's basketball team rounded up a 19-6 overall record alongside a 13-4 mark in the Mid-South Conference during the 2020-21 campaign. This was good enough for the team to earn a bid into the NAIA National Tournament for the seventh straight season.

The Blue Raiders produced two NAIA All-Americans in Reagan Turner (First Team) and Bree Glover (Honorable Mention). Both players also gathered First Team All-MSC honors as well. Turner led the team in scoring at 22.1 points per game and 2.9 assists per game, while Glover garnered a team-best mark at 10.5 rebounds per game, 1.6 steals per game, and 2.5 blocks per game. Turner etched herself into the 2,000 career point club on Dec. 5 against Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) and is now the programs all-time leading scorer at 2,284 career points. Glover rolled out eight of the team's 10 total double-doubles on the season and tied the program record for blocks in a game (seven) on Feb. 4 against Campbellsville (KY).

A Columbia Landmark and Historic Stage

By Mike Watson

Recently a conversation arose concerning the Hotel on the corner of Greensburg Street and the Public Square in Columbia. There is a long and storied history of this piece of real estate, and also of the hotel, built in 1898 by John Conover. The following is a far-from-complete history, but a starter, of sorts. The photograph accompanying this article is undated, but the Barbee Stagecoach depicted on the Square is well known.

In 1898 John N. Conover built a fine brick hotel on the northwest corner of the Public Square. It was the finest and most modern building in Columbia for many years. Built on the site of a previously burned hotel, Mr. Conover's hotel contained twenty-eight rooms and fronted on Greensburg Street and the Square. Managed by Mr. and Mrs. George Coffey and Mrs. Kate Smith, there was a gala opening on 7 December 1898. The hotel was known by several names, as many persons operated it over the years.

CPD: Possession/wanton endangerment arrest

By Officer Adam Cravens, PIO
Columbia Police Department

On Thursday evening, July 15, 2021, an officer responded to what was initially a noise complaint at an apartment complex on Carie Bolin Drive.

Upon arrival, the officer made contact with two female juveniles who stated they were alone. While speaking with females, the officer could smell a strong odor of marijuana coming from the apartment.

Officers were able to contact a male staying at the residence who had left to go to a nearby store and came back to speak with officers. Male subject refused to allow officers to search the apartment, and a search warrant was obtained at which time officers made entry.

Inside, a female was attempting to hide from officers. She had three active warrants from three counties. The search also yielded findings of marijuana and suspected methamphetamine.
