KDFP encourages residents to celebrate the 4th of July safely

By Sherelle Roberts-Pierre

Frankfort, KY - Don't let your backyard summer celebrations end with a trip to the emergency room. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, on average,180 people a day visit an emergency room with fireworks-related injuries in the month around the July 4th holiday.

That's why the Kentucky Public Protection Cabinet's Division of Fire Prevention encourages families to stay safe by attending firework celebrations that are conducted by licensed professionals.

"As COVID-19 cases decline and capacity limits and mask requirements are lifted, local governments across Kentucky are hosting fireworks celebrations and other activities as a way to celebrate the holiday," said Rick Rand, commissioner of the Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction. "In addition to safety concerns, it's important to point out, I think, that part of being a good neighbor is recognizing there are some citizens, and most pets, that do not tolerate loud, unexpected bangs well and fireworks can cause stress and discomfort."

The following safety practices are recommended when using consumer fireworks:

KSP to participate in Operation SafeDRIVE

By Sergeant Jason H. Morris

Frankfort, KY - Kentucky State Police (KSP) Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Officers will be participating in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's Operation SafeDRIVE (Distracted Reckless Impaired Visibility Enforcement) from June 22-24. This enforcement campaign targets unsafe driving behavior that often leads to crashes involving passenger cars and commercial vehicles. It complements national efforts to educate all drivers on how to share the roads safely with large trucks.

The national SafeDRIVE initiative cracks down on dangerous interstate driving behaviors such as aggressive driving, speeding, tailgating, failing to wear a seat belt, distracted driving and driving under the influence. During this effort, KSP Commercial Vehicle Inspectors will have scale facilities open ensuring commercial drivers are following safety regulations, including hours of service compliance, commercial driver license compliance, medical certification, and commercial motor vehicle credentialing.

KOHS partners with law enforcement on Speed Awareness

By Erin G. Eggen

Frankfort, KY - The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet's (KYTC) Office of Highway Safety (KOHS) is partnering with law enforcement agencies across the state on the 'Not So Fast, Kentucky' speed awareness campaign through July 10.

"As traffic increases on our roads this summer, we must do our part to help protect ourselves and each other," said Gov. Andy Beshear. "Whether you drive a car, truck or motorcycle, put your phone down and slow down."

According to the KOHS, crash reports and citation data indicates 31 percent of crashes in Kentucky involve a speeding or aggressive driver. Males are the driver in 66 percent of those speed-related crashes.

"Speed limits are put in place to protect all road users," said KYTC Secretary Jim Gray. "Driving over the limit greatly reduces a driver's ability to respond to unexpected situations such as stopped or slowed traffic, an object in the road, or encountering vulnerable road users such as pedestrians, bicyclists and motorcyclists."

Letter: Migratory birds

Marie Freeman writes:
There were hundreds of thousands perhaps millions of migratory birds die in the south west last fall. This year I have seen no indigo buntings, yellow finches, wrens. The native birds are here, in lower numbers it seems. Birds are dying now in the south and southeast with little explanation, yet. What concerns me is the blindness, seizures and neurological symptoms. Canary in the coal mind? I can't imagine the next generation not hearing the songs from the woods... The chain between nature and human is linked, without that link survival will be diminished!

Letter: bird population is dropping

Wendy Burt: writes:
More than half a century ago, conservationist Rachel Carson sounded an alarm about human impacts on the natural world with her book Silent Spring. The treatise spawned the modern conservation movement. But research from the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology and the American Bird Conservancy published in 2019 shows bird populations have continued to plummet in the past five decades, dropping by nearly three billion across North America - -an overall decline of 29 percent from 1970.

That's more than 1 in 4 birds that have disappeared from the North American landscape in a mere half a century.

Certainly avian disease is a problem, but climate change, habitat destruction, and rampant pesticide use together are irrevocably changing our natural world. Because of the roles birds play in ecosystems, the magnitude of the decline could significantly affect the continent's food webs and ecosystems -- pest control, pollination and seed dispersal, etc.
