Kentucky ranks high for business climate

Frankfort, KY - Gov. Andy Beshear's vision for building a better Kentucky continues to charge ahead as the commonwealth recently tied for fifth nationally on Site Selection magazine's 2021 Prosperity Cup list, an annual ranking of the top U.S. states for business climate.

"Every day we are working to create a brighter future for Kentuckians, with quality jobs, better wages and educational opportunities for all residents," Gov. Beshear said. "Site Selection's 2021 Prosperity Cup rankings offer the latest proof that Kentucky is positioned for success, and our state's economy is poised for tremendous post-pandemic growth. The strength of our project announcements in 2020 shows existing Kentucky companies are dedicated to building something special in our state and new companies continue to discover the many benefits of locating in the commonwealth. This top-5 placement indicates a major step forward for Kentucky, but we are just getting started."

Jane Lampton Clemens born 18 June 1803

By Mike Watson

Jane Lampton Clemens was born in Columbia in Adair County, Kentucky, 18 June 1803. Her maternal grandfather, Colonel William Casey, was a Revolutionary War veteran, frontiersman, and lent his name to the county of Casey upon formation. In 1823, Jane married John Marshall Clemens, a Virginia native who was living in Adair County where he practiced law. The marriage occurred in Columbia. The newlyweds lived in rented rooms in the John Field house, one of Columbia's three oldest homes located on present-day Reed Street.

The Clemens family moved to Tennessee where they started their family, after several years they relocated to Florida, Missouri and eventually Hannibal, Missouri, where John Marshall died in 1847. After John's death, Jane lived near to or with three of her children in various locations.

Jane and John were the parents of seven children, four of whom lived to adulthood, but the best known was sixth child, Samuel Langhorne Clemens, born in 1835. Samuel became known around the world by his pen name, Mark Twain.

Today, June 18, we celebrate the birth anniversary of Jane Lampton, Mrs. Clemens.

By Carol Perkins

As Father's Day approaches, did you know that the most significant role model in a child's life is the same sex parent? For every son, there is a father who will have a positive or negative influence.

I thought about how wonderful it would be if a child could design his father. What would he desire? If you could have designed your father, how would you have changed him? Here are my thoughts.
