Carol Perkins: My neck is sore

Previous Column: Life is a circle

By Carol Perkins

After losing a substantial amount of weight (for me), I was excited for my yearly checkup with my cardiologist in Louisville, who once told me my breathing problem was because I had no neck. He didn't mean it insultingly, but when he gave me that news, my eyes bugged, I looked at Guy, and he nodded as if he knew.

"This time," I said before leaving home, "I'm going to shock the doctor by showing him my neck."

As soon as Dr. A.K. Sharma came into the room, he was outwardly surprised. "You don't look like the same person," he said, pleased that I had taken his advice a year ago and dropped down to a size I haven't been in years.

I couldn't resist. I raised my chin and announced, "Now I have a neck!" He laughed at the joke between us (I had sent him the article I had written about having no neck), but then I continued, "The problem is that the neck I didn't have has now been found, and it's drooping! I have used every cream that I think will work."

He explained the scientific reason for gathering loose skin (my double chin had to go somewhere) and told me to exercise my neck.

Birds of Kentucky: Song Sparrow

2021-06-05 - Central Kentucky - Photo by Pen.
All About Birds has this to say about the Song Sparrow: "Like many other songbirds, the male Song Sparrow uses its song to attract mates as well as defend its territory. Laboratory studies have shown that the female Song Sparrow is attracted not just to the song itself, but to how well it reflects the ability of the male to learn. Males that used more learned components in their songs and that better matched their song tutors (the adult bird they learned their songs from) were preferred."

LCDHD COVID-19 Public Information Brief 6/4/2021

By Amy Tomlinson
Lake Cumberland District Health Department

We added fewer new cases this week (76) than for the same time period last week (106) so our 7-day-average incidence rate of new cases per 100,000 went down to 5.19 today compared to 7.30 last Friday. Unfortunately, the last 3 days of this week showed an increase in cases.

Hopefully, that will not continue into next week. We experienced 2 deaths related to COVID-19 this week. We have 74 active cases today compared with 87 last Friday. We have 12 cases hospitalized today compared with 13 last Friday. Our vaccination numbers are creeping upward, but we still have no counties with an uptake rate higher than the state average.

Statewide Testing Positivity Rate: 2.47%.
