Letter: Kellyville was named after the Kellys

Joe Hare writes:
The Kelly's lived where the current RECC sub-station is located at the corner of Cane Valley Road and Kellyville Road. The last one to live there was Ms. Sally Kelly, who was a well-known member of the local communities. She was known for riding the Greyhound bus to Louisville for the State Fair to enter her home and garden products. Hopefully someone more senior and a better memory than myself can comment and make corrections.

ACSO: Adair man arrested after 8 hour standoff in Breeding

By Sheriff Josh Brockman
Adair County Sheriff's Office

The incident began on Monday, May 17, 2021, when Adair County 911 received a call from the Kentucky State Police about an impaired driver on KY 55 North. A deputy was dispatched to area and around 3:30amCT, Deputy Joey Keith located the suspect vehicle and initiated a traffic stop.

During the stop the suspect fled just as Deputy Keith approached the window. A pursuit ensued, lasting for more than 20 minutes, coming into Columbia--where CPD joined in--before eventually crossing into Green County.

After the pursued vehicle crossed through hay fields, visual contact with suspect was lost and the pursuit was terminated.

Deputy Keith and the Adair County Sheriff's Office were able to identify the operator later that day, and warrants for his arrest were obtained.

At approximately 10pmCT, Adair County Sheriff's Deputies went to the residence in an attempt to serve the felony warrants.

The suspect was in the residence and refused to come out, ultimately barricading himself into the residence, where he was observed inside coming to windows with a rifle.

Produce growers reminded to take survey, schedule training

By Sean Southard

Frankfort, KY - As planting season begins, Kentucky's produce growers are entering a busy time of year. While producing delicious, nutritious food is the ultimate goal, Kentucky producers always work hard to put safety first.

"Kentucky produce growers are responsible for some of the freshest, nutrient-rich, and delicious products offered in grocery stores, farm stands, and farmers' markets across the state," Commissioner of Agriculture Dr. Ryan Quarles said. "Part of that is the dedication it takes to keep our food, environment, and people safe. The Kentucky Department of Agriculture's Produce Safety Rules help growers do exactly that."

In 2011, Congress passed the Food Safety Modernization Act, a law that tasked the U.S. Food and Drug Administration with implementing new food safety protocols aimed at increasing food safety across the nation.

When did Kelleyville become Kellyville?

By Pen

I noticed when posting recent church news that Kelleyville Community Church is on Kellyville Road.

I asked churchmember Linda Tucker about it, and she says, "I have always known the church has a 'e' but the road doesn't, not sure who is right or who is wrong."

Although there don't seem to be any road signs confirming it, the General Highway Map for Adair County from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet lists the official name of the community as "Kellyville," and all three maps I've consulted agree on the name of the road, at least since the 1990s.

A search of the CM archives turns up lots of examples of both spellings for both road and church over the years, with the official photo in our Directory of Churches, taken back in 2010 by photographers Joe Hare and John E. Moss, listing the church as "Kellyville Community Church." It's possible that the late, great Ed Waggener's preference for brevity propagated a misspelling across dozens of photos and articles over the years. I know that I've consulted that listing to un-correct the spelling to "Kellyville" on many occasions.

Google lists (and tries to autocorrect) everything to Kellyville, including the name of the church. However, The Google is clearly wrong in this instance, as the church name is confirmed both online and empirically--on the sign at the entrance--as "Kelleyville Community Church."

Do you remember when or why that divergence in spelling occurred? Use our contact form to weigh in.
