Carol Perkins: Oh no, not again

Previous Column: Eighteen Again

By Carol Perkins

Oh no, not again. Right in the middle of the meat department at Sam's, a cold shudder came over me when I realized my Vera Bradly tiny pouch that held my ID, my debit card, and my phone were gone. Frantic thoughts raced to the last time I had them. In the garden center outside the door. We moved to the checkout without any mention of my dilemma. I was confident that I would find them with one sweep through the flowers.

Guy loaded the groceries on the back of the truck while I disappeared across the lot. "Where are you going?" he asked, fearful I was after more flowering bushes. I waved to him.

I scoured the flower center in partial darkness but found nothing. Guy followed me, which meant I had to confess. Even though the store was now closed, the associates we gracious and understanding. They searched lost and found and even called my cell phone. Nothing. "Call tomorrow and see if someone turned it in," a young guy suggested.

Tommy Druen: Thoughts on justice

Tommy Druen is a native of Metcalfe County, with roots in Adair County going back to the 18th century. He presently lives in Georgetown, Kentucky.

By Tommy Druen

On an early October afternoon in 1995, Americans sat glued to our televisions. We anxiously awaited the verdict of the first trial to capture our collective attention since the advent of cable news. Soon we learned that twelve jurors in Los Angeles acquitted O.J. Simpson of two counts of murder. For 26 years, we have been constantly reminded of that trial. It was a true cultural defining point for our nation and changed how we learned, thought and reacted to the judicial system.

There were many parallels in the recent case of Derek Chauvin. Once again, cable news dedicated much of its coverage to a singular trial. This time, however, it was in the public spotlight not because of a celebrity factor, but because of the impact of and outrage centered around George Floyd's death by Chauvin's hands this past spring.

Volumes of pages have been dedicated to the causes and effects of Floyd's death. It happened at a time when we, as a society, were ready to have deeper discussions that went beyond one person. Much like the case of Ernesto Miranda in 1965, I suspect the case will have long-lasting effects and reforms within our criminal justice system. But, while I have opinions regarding the case, there is nothing I can write that has not already been discussed ad nauseam.

Rather, I'd like to address justice.

Quarles: Mostly back to normal for ag events this summer

By Sean Southard

Frankfort, KY - Kentucky Commissioner of Agriculture Dr. Ryan Quarles has directed Kentucky Department of Agriculture (KDA) staff to support the state's robust agricultural traditions this summer as a way of bringing some level of normalcy to 2021.

"As I've said for weeks now, with widespread vaccine access and more knowledge about the coronavirus, it's beyond time to fully reopen Kentucky," Commissioner Quarles said. "Last year, we successfully modified everything from farmers' markets to livestock shows to occur safely. Kentuckians should know my staff and I are here to support local officials in any way possible as they attempt to bring a level of normalcy back to Kentucky. I look forward to hitting the road this summer to visit our farmers' markets, agritourism destinations, county fairs, and livestock shows."

The Kentucky Department of Agriculture plans to move forward with supporting local agricultural events throughout the summer. The Department encourages local officials to monitor both state and Centers for Disease Control guidelines when planning events.

"Governor Beshear's decision to lift the mask mandate for outdoor events with less than 1,000 people pretty much encompasses every agricultural tradition in Kentucky," added Quarles. "That decision, coupled with wide vaccine availability, means our agricultural community is going to move ahead with a year that looks much more like 2019 than 2020."

LCDHD COVID-19 Public Information Brief 5/7/2021

By Amy Tomlinson
Lake Cumberland District Health Department

We had an unusually high number of new cases this week, 188, compared to last week, 134. This causes our districtwide 7-day-average-incidence rate of new cases to go up to 12.827 per day, placing our district in total in the "orange-accelerated" range of community spread. We had 1 case pass away during this week. We have 162 active cases today compared to 132 active cases last Friday. We have 14 hospitalized COVID-19 cases today compared to 13 last Friday.

This significant increase in new cases this week is concerning. Hopefully, next week will be better. The last thing anyone wants is another area surge. This week serves as a reminder that the pandemic is not over, and that our citizens need to take the vaccine.

Our 7-day average incidence chart is now showing 0 counties in the "green-on-track" range; 5 counties in the "yellow-community-spread" category, Clinton, Cumberland, Green, McCreary, and Wayne; and 5 counties in the "orange-accelerated" range of community-spread: Adair, Casey, Pulaski, Russell, and Taylor. We are thankful to not have any "red-critical" counties now. Keep in mind, some of our 7-day-incidence data will be skewed over the next few days as we are reconciling our data against the state data.

Statewide Testing Positivity Rate: 3.5%.

Phillip Coffey: Ginseng Digging

By Phillip Coffey
"Do you think you can get it for a song
And sing it yourself," said my Dad's Father, Cassius
To his fourth son and fifth child - William "Joe" Edgar.
"Don't know but he sure enjoyed, 'Ginseng digging'."

He and I would 'take off' to find the much prized herbal
Found in the forest of Kentucky to be eventually sent
To that Communist country with all those 'many people'.
"Here is a pocketful - find you some more if you need it."
