Helping Hands in Metcalfe can use helping hands In 2002, the Metcalfe County Service Unit of the Salvation Army was organized to assist needy Metcalfe County residents. It was for those who needed financial assistance due to job loss, fire, weather related events, or sickness. At that time, the group was assured that all monies received would stay in Metcalfe County. Many thousands of dollars were given to Metcalfe County families. In the beginning a letter requesting "seed money" was mailed to all Metcalfe County Churches and many were very generous. Funds were also raised with the well-known Salvation Army Kettle Drive from Thanksgiving until Christmas. A few years ago, the Metcalfe Unit was told that several thousand dollars were owed to the state Salvation Army Office for years of nonpayment of the required share. The group relayed to the state what was promised in the beginning but were simply told "that information was wrong". The Metcalfe Service Unit of the Salvation dissolved. Realizing a need still exists for a local organization to help our needy residents, a nonprofit organization called Metcalfe County Helping Hands was formed and has already assisted many Metcalfe County residents. Shelby Robertson receives WKU Scholarship for study abroad Shelby Robertson of Russell County has been recognized by the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship for study abroad in the October 2020 application cycle. Twenty-one WKU students--more than any other university in Kentucky--were offered scholarships totaling $98,500 with an average award amount of $4,690. Four additional students were recognized as alternates. Shelby Robertson is the daughter of Pam and Brent Robertson. A biology major with a minor in biophysics, she is pursuing a career as a physician invested in rural areas and advocating for equal access to healthcare. She will study in Tanzania in summer 2021. Letter: Cases of COVID-19 in Adair County Charles Marshburn writes: Why are the names of those who test positive not posted so those folks can be avoided? How many cases are there officially in Adair County? What percentage of the population of Adair county has tested positive.Charles, thanks for writing. The main reason names aren't shared is that since the HIPAA act of 1996, it is illegal for health care providers to disclose those names. On the other hand, it is perfectly fine for individuals to announce their exposure themselves, and they should be letting everyone who might have been in contact with them know. In our experience, the local health departments are doing their very best to make sure that process happens quickly and thoroughly. We've added the local case totals graphic that LCDHD provided to the LCDHD COVID-19 Public Information Brief 12/11/2020 posted earlier this morning. Graham promoted, obtains Ph.D. at Campbellsville University By Anastasia Gentry Campbellsville, KY - - Jennifer Graham has been promoted to assistant professor of business at Campbellsville University in action approved recently by the Campbellsville University Board of Trustees. Graham will be one of the first graduates of Campbellsville University's Ph.D. program where she will receive her Ph.D. in Management with a specialization in Leadership in a virtual ceremony Dec. 18. Graham is a 1979 graduate of Taylor County High School. She graduated cum laude from Campbellsville University in 2010 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree with a major in Organizational Management. She received the Organizational Management Award for having a 4.0 grade point average. She earned her Master of Business Administration degree from Campbellsville University in 2011, also with a 4.0 grade point average. She is the wife of Frankie Graham; they have two children, Bobby Graham and Angela Graham Wilkerson. She is the daughter of Lula Baldwin of Campbellsville and the late Bradley Baldwin. LCDHD COVID-19 Public Information Brief 12/11/2020 By Amy Tomlinson Lake Cumberland District Health Department The most recent set of restrictions by the Governor is set to expire Sunday night, though many limitations still exist. Just because some restrictions are being lifted, please do not take that as a signal everything can go back to normal. While we are not in favor of lockdowns, we are neither in favor of behaving as if we aren't in the middle of a pandemic. Everyone should follow the precautions to avoid crowds, to social distance, and to mask. Statewide Testing Positivity Rate: 8.86%. Deaths: We are sad to report 11 new deaths today. We have experienced a total of 175 deaths resulting in a 1.63% mortality rate (about 1 in 61) among known cases. This compares with a 1% mortality rate at the state level, and a 1.87% mortality rate at the national level. Our hearts and prayers go out to all the families and friends who have lost loved ones. Hospitalizations: We presently have 66 cases* in the hospital. This is 34 less than what we reported yesterday. We have had a total of 641 hospitalizations resulting in a 5.98% hospitalization rate (about 1 in 17) among known cases. The state hospitalization rate is 5.15%. The latest data shows that 97.8% of Lake Cumberland's ICU beds are filled, and 36.8% of ventilator capicity is being utilized. (*This number is an estimation. Due to the high numbers, we only check with the hospitals on Fridays now. Therefore, the best time to see the most accurate hospital data will be in the Saturday News Brief.)
