Letter: Need option for safe application for Utility Relief

Marie Freeman writes:
I'm really shocked that there's no way to apply for this without going in and exposing yourself in a very small building to a possible Covid virus? You can send someone else in with your paperwork but it's still the same situation you have to ask a loved one or friend to expose themselves. Why is there no online application or a way to do it with out contact? That should be so simple?

I would imagine there's a lot of people that need this that don't want the risk because of the virus. I don't know if anyone's been in that building but it's very small. And they lineup for the applications. Seems pretty thoughtless for the poor.

Governor: Sixth straight day of declining positivity

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - Today, Gov. Andy Beshear announced that while COVID-19 numbers in the commonwealth are still alarmingly high, Team Kentucky is making progress in its fight against the virus.

Today was the state's sixth straight day with a declining positivity rate, showing that Kentuckians' ongoing sacrifices and the Governor's recent actions to slow the spread have made an impact.

"We continue to see some promising trends in our COVID-19 numbers. They are still far too high, but given that we were experiencing exponential growth before we took those difficult steps, this is evidence that we may not just be slowing down that growth, we may even be plateauing our cases," said Gov. Beshear. "You have to slow down the train before you stop it, and you have to stop it before you turn it around."

Letter: Pellyton church

Joyce M. Coomer writes:
Only the upper floor of the Pellyton church, which the Masonic Lodge used, was torn down and moved to Roley to build a new lodge. My uncle, Ray Thomas, and a Pelly man (I cannot remember his name.) removed the upper story, replaced the roof and if I remember correctly, Momma said they constructed the lodge in Roley.

Letter: Watch out for Celastrus orbiculatus

Michael Potter writes:
It is hard to tell from the picture, however it might be Celastrus orbiculatus. If it is, do everything possible to eliminate it. It spreads quickly, grows very fast and covers other vegetation, including trees. It forms an extremely dense overstory that blocks virtually all sunlight to the understory plant on which it is growing, including trees. I have attached a word doc with two pictures: one showing it growing and one showing the results. Hopefully it is Celastrus scandens and not Celastrus orbiculatus.

CU preparing for 2021 amid prolonging COVID-19 pandemic

By Scarlett Birge

Campbellsville, KY - "There are still a lot of unknowns," Dr. Donna Hedgepath, provost and vice president for academic affairs, said about the current state of operation for Campbellsville University's upcoming spring 2021 semester.

The university plans to run the 2021 spring semester in a similar fashion as it did for the 2020 fall semester. However, with uncertainty still surrounding the virus, constant monitoring and assessment is a necessity in order to uphold the safety of everyone involved.

"Many things are changing daily in relation to the virus," David Walters, Healthy-at-Work officer and interim director of the Center for Global Engagement, said.

"Administration is still in the process of determining any new protocols related to COVID-19 for the spring semester," Hedgepath said. "With so many changes occurring daily, we are waiting for the latest information from the governor and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)."

"We are hopeful for a vaccine that will allow us to return to normal activities," Hedgepath said. "In the meantime, we plan to return much like we did in August, always keeping an eye on the potential for remote learning."

LRC launches card-writing initiative for holidays

By Jim Hannah, LRC

Frankfort, KY - The Legislative Research Commission (LRC) wanted to make residents of long-term care facilities across Kentucky a little less lonely during a holiday season marked by social distancing.

That's why LRC employees launched a card-writing initiative this month. The goal was to send at least one handwritten card to each of the state's about 250 long-term care facilities, but some of those facilities have requested cards for each resident.

"If your family is anything like mine, curtailing holiday traditions because of social distancing has been hard on the soul," said LRC Director Jay Hartz, who was the catalyst for the initiative. "That's why my heart truly goes out to those families with loved ones in long-term care facilities who won't be able to spend time with them this holiday season. My hope is this card-writing initiative fosters some of that human connection lost with the restrictions."

More than 50 LRC employees have volunteered their time to write personalized messages, said Legislative Services Training and Education Coordinator Lisa Thomas, who helped spearhead the project.

AD: WHY DOES MUSCLE MATTER? LONGEVITY.

By Easton Bryant, PharmD

Skeletal muscle is our largest organ, yet it's also the most neglected.

And longevity? It doesn't only mean living longer, but also living better. We're not talking about adding years to your life, rather life to your years - to "die young" as late as possible!

When the topic of exercise comes up with my patients, it's way too often that I hear about their walking routine...only. Brisk walking is an awesome way to stay active, but when it serves as their one and only method of exercise, there's a major problem.

Our society's problem isn't so much about being over-fat as it is under-muscled. And weight isn't relevant here - at 65, you can weigh the same as you did at 25 while having twice the fat and half the muscle. It's a major reason people end up in a nursing home. They may not be sick, but they can't get up out of a chair, and they have a fall leading to a broken hip.

COVID-19: a survivor tells what it's like

By Pam Spires

COVID-19 is real, people. It's everywhere. It's taking lives hourly and not just old people either.

November 18th I started running a fever, I knew it without even taking my temp, I felt like I was on fire from the inside out. My legs hurt, they felt like they weighed 200 pounds each.

I took my temperature, it was 102. I'm someone whose temp is usually 96 or less. I took some Tylenol and went to bed. Sleep was all I needed.

So I thought...

On the 19th I went to be tested.

Positive. Where did I get it? I never went anywhere that I didn't wear my mask. I just don't go anywhere.

I hadn't been with anyone who had it, that they knew of... that's how easy it is to catch.
