Beshear thanks all who sacrificed for greater good during holiday

First responders; health care workers; workers battling food insecurity; responsible business owners, employees; Kentuckians following guidelines among many heroes who rose to challenge

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - On Sunday, Gov. Andy Beshear thanked every Kentuckian who sacrificed for each other and rose to the challenge of battling COVID-19 together during the Thanksgiving holiday.

"The thing about this crisis is, all of us might step up in a different way, but each of our contributions matter," said Gov. Beshear. "To every family who changed their traditions this year to keep others safe - thank you. To our only line health care workers and first responders who have put your own safety at risk during this pandemic - thank you. To our tireless neighbors battling food insecurity and making sure Kentuckians can put dinner on the table, on Thanksgiving and every day - thank you. And to the retail, grocery, logistics and food and beverage professionals who did the right thing to keep yourselves and customers safe this week - thank you. To these heroes, and so many others, you are all the best of Team Kentucky."

KSP: Prepare for potential winter weather

By Sgt. Billy Gregory

Frankfort, KY - Kentuckians could experience their first taste of winter weather as a band of snow is predicted to impact the Commonwealth late Sunday night. The Kentucky State Police (KSP) are asking motorists to be aware that weather conditions may change rapidly over the next 24 hours.

"While we can never completely predict what the forecast will be, it is a great time for citizens to prepare for the winter driving season," says KSP Spokesman Sgt. Billy Gregory.

Gregory says citizens need to rethink their driving behaviors this time of year, which include slowing down, leaving more space between cars and prepping their car with necessary supplies should they become stranded.

KSP developed a list of items motorists should place in their vehicles before the weather sets in. This includes a winter weather kit with items such as a cell phone charger, blankets, first-aid kit, jumper cables, windshield scraper, collapsible shovel, and a flashlight with batteries.

More pickle dog shortage
Last week I cited the shortage of good wholesome pickle dog in other parts of the United States, as first reported by Pauline Rogers of Columbia, in Around Adalr in the Dally Statesman. .

Mary Wilcoxson, of the First National Bank, tells me that I didn't write the half of it.

"I just returned from Bremerton, Washington, to visit my Son, Pete," she says. "I took him two gallons of pickle dog, as be insists it is not available there."

You'd think, she says, that her son would have shared the delicacy with the Washingtonians. But no. "He had company and they had never tasted pickle dog," she recounts, "and they asked him to let them taste it. He said, 'No, you won't like it.' But he finished one whole gallon in one week."

Mrs. Wilcoxson says that the plight of other parts of the country is just as bad.

Support The Rogers Scholars program on Dec. 1, GivingTuesday

To make an online, tax-deductible donation to the Rogers Scholars program, visit www.centeryouthprograms.com. The GivingTuesday donation page is live, and supporters may make donations before and on December 1, 2020. It's simple, easy, and only takes a few minutes to donate.

The Center for Rural Development is asking supporters to make a difference in the lives of young people in Southern and Eastern Kentucky by giving back to the Rogers Scholars program on December 1, 2020 -- GivingTuesday.

Rogers Scholars--The Center's flagship youth program--is an intensive one-week summer program that provides valuable leadership skills and exclusive college scholarship opportunities for rising high school juniors in The Center's 45-county primary service area to seize their potential as the region's next generation of leaders and entrepreneurs.

"We are excited to be a part of the GivingTuesday campaign and encourage supporters to consider making an online donation to the Rogers Scholars program on or before Dec. 1," said Lonnie Lawson, President and CEO of The Center for Rural Development. "All donations will go directly to support the program and will change the lives of young people in Southern and Eastern Kentucky."

The Rogers Scholars program is provided tuition-free to students and supported solely through donations, contributions, and special fund-raising events.

LCDHD COVID-19 Public Information Brief 11/28/2020

Two deaths Saturday, November 28, 2020 - a 66-year-old male from Adair who had been hospitalized; and, a 75-year-old male from Taylor who had been hospitalized.

By Amy Tomlinson
Lake Cumberland District Health Department

Though we still have high numbers, this week was an improvement over last, at least in some aspects. Maybe this is a fluke due to fewer people seeking testing over the holidays. Nevertheless, we will take the good news and hope it continues into the next week. We have 78 fewer active cases compared to last week (1,023 vs 1,101). We added 961 new cases this week compared to 1,203 last week. On the negative side, our deaths this week were higher than last (11 compared to 8), as were our hospitalizations (65 this Saturday compared to 63 last Saturday).

Remember, it is within our power to impact the spread of COVID-19, and it will take a community-wide committment to improve our situation. Please, let's all do our part in slowing the spread of COVID-19 by wearing our face coverings, avoiding crowds (especially in confined spaces), social distancing when around others, increasing our hand hygiene, increasing our general sanitation, and by avoiding the touching of our faces.
