Unique partnership will commercialize tech innovations

With nearly $1.16 million in funding, Kentucky Commercialization Ventures combines resources from state's public academic institutions, KSTC and KY Innovation to create tech jobs and startups

By Crystal Staley/Jack Mazurak

Frankfort, KY - Gov. Andy Beshear announced today the creation of Kentucky Commercialization Ventures (KCV), a new public-private partnership unique in the U.S. that aims to develop academic innovations into job-creating tech companies.

"We all want to grow Kentucky's tech sector and create the high-paying, knowledge-based jobs that follow. A big part of doing so is turning Kentucky's own academic research and development capabilities into commercially viable products and startups," the Governor said. "By partnering to create Kentucky Commercialization Ventures, we will provide the infrastructure to commercialize our own best ideas, build the commonwealth's tech industry and distinguish Kentucky as a national model in innovation."

KCV brings together the University of Kentucky and University of Louisville with the Kentucky Science and Technology Corp. (KSTC) and KY Innovation, the state's office for entrepreneurial and small business support. Under recently signed contracts, Kentucky this fiscal year will pay KSTC $755,000 and over the next two fiscal years $200,000 to each of UofL's and UK's research foundations.

Back to School: In classroom or from a distance?

What we know about Adair County's fall school schedules at this point is that parents and students need to give their decision of the type of attendance they desire as quickly as possible to help plan for the fall.

Calls are being made now for the survey, requesting that families let the school Board know their intentions on or before August 10, 2020. If a family has not been called, they are urged to contact the school central office to let them know the choice as quickly as possible. Survey questions are here, or you can call the School Board at 270-384-2476.

A chart follows, and is also available on the schools website at this link: Differences in Learning Types (PDF), to help students and their families know what choices look like.

Members of staff and faculty are doing everything possible to keep everyone safe. Work is ongoing planning distancing within the rooms, directional plans and much more.

Carol Perkins: Looking to the Future

Previous Column: No easy answer for parents

By Carol Perkins

I have started to pretend. Having done much of it in my life, I don't have to try very hard. Lately, I've pretended that I rented a condo, went to the beach, sat on the balcony, and felt the breeze from the ocean or the gulf. I read, slept, and relaxed. Then I realized that I could buy a sound machine and do the same thing here: read, sleep, and relax. I've had enough of those to last a lifetime. I need some action. I need the ocean.

I pretended Jon and his family drove all night from Texas so they wouldn't have to stop along the way to stay in a hotel. When they arrived, they filed out the car and rushed to us as if it had been years instead of almost seven months. Seven months is an eternity for grandparents.

After hugs and declarations of how much they had grown, they ate a huge meal with their favorites. Then we sat outside on the patio and talked. Later, Carla and her family arrived from Tennessee and we pretended we were on the summer vacation we used to take. All of this is too risky.

I pretended once that Guy and I were on a cruise.

Governor's Thursday update

"Today is one of the highest days we've had. Let's remember every day with a high number of cases is a day we don't want to have," said Gov. Beshear. "We continue to see hospital systems in the states to our south running out of ICU beds."

Unfortunately, Gov. Beshear reported seven new deaths Thursday, raising the total to 684 Kentuckians lost to the virus.

The deaths reported Thursday include a 60-year-old woman from Casey County; a 49-year-old woman from Fayette County, a 57-year-old woman from Jefferson County; a 64-year-old woman from Knox County; two women, ages 88 and 89, from Ohio County; and a 68-year-old woman from Whitley County.

Bountiful Blessings

By Phillip Coffey

Focused with the intensity of a Lottery Scratch-off 'payroll-ee'.
I arise to meet the challenges of another day.
Stumbling to my first cup of coffee of many.
No need for answers, let others reap and pay.

Sipping on my 'Shirley Temple Long Island Tea'
Surrounded by mowers and birds a-singing.
The Lord above providing me with my every need.
My soul is resting - boundless, bountiful blessings.

Letter: Remembers when JFK was shot as a tiny girl

Mary Elliswrites:
I was knee high to a grasshopper the day JFK died and reluctant to share til I noticed Kerry's account at a very young age. My recollection is like yesterday.

I remember opening the screen door at my mammie's house, walking in and just standing there watching the events unfold on her ole black and white 'square box' tv. Not a sound was being made, other than the special news report.

The outside antenna actually provided a clear picture that day, no snowy reception. It's one of many dramatic events I've stored and kept upstairs a lifetime. - Mary
