Governor's Saturday update: 583 new cases reported

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - Gov. Andy Beshear on Saturday updated Kentuckians on steps the state is taking to fight the novel coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) in the commonwealth.

"Take care of each other. Wear facial coverings. Stay six feet apart. Do all of the things we need to do. We know how to beat COVID-19," said Gov. Beshear. "Let's come together. I know we're going to get through this. I'm counting on you and I'm proud of you. It's go time and let's get it done right now."

As of 4 p.m. July 18, Gov. Beshear said there were at least 22,184 coronavirus cases in Kentucky, 583 of which were newly reported Saturday. This is the second-highest number of cases reported in a single day in Kentucky.

"That means this is a dangerous time and it can't be explained away by our increase in tests," said Gov. Beshear. "We've got to be careful. We've got to make sure that we are wearing our facial coverings, because today's cases are a reflection of 14 days ago before we mandated those. This is what it's going to take if we want to save our economy and save lives and get our kids back in school, it's really that simple."

COVID-19 Q&A: questions about tests

Each week the Lake Cumberland District Health Department takes questions from media and the public. Following are two of the questions on our minds:

Question: The asymptomatic cases reported in this county - how were they diagnosed? By random testing, testing before a procedure, contact tracing or other?

Answer: People are tested for several different reasons those who are asymptomatic may have been tested for pre-op procedures. They may have been a contact to a positive case or they may have just requested testing.

Question: My son's friend that he goes to the gym with has tested positive, does my son need to be tested?

Answer: A person may choose to have a COVIS-19 test whether symptomatic or not, if they have been exposed. If you have been in contact with a positive case within 6 feet for 10 minutes or more you are a contact and will need to quarantine for 14 days. You can become positive anytime up to 14 days.

Letter: Statement from Columbia Mayor Hoots

Pamela Hoots, Mayor, City of Columbia, writes:
It has come to my attention that there is concern about an announcement I made earlier this week.

On Wednesday, July 15, I released a statement making City Hall accessible to the public; only by appointment. This was not an easy decision; but, considering the city has had a reported five positive cases for COVID-19, within our City family, I felt we had no other choice.

I feel it is my responsibility as Mayor to protect the safety and health of our community; as well as all city employees. With that being said, I made this decision.

This is temporary only. We want to ensure that the current situation was not worsening; and, at a standstill with our staff.

If anyone knows me; they know I am a huge supporter of our local businesses; who are the backbone of our community. I would never consider the "closing-down" of our community; but, under these circumstances; felt it was my responsibility to protect and serve all.

Once again, I thank you for your ongoing support; and, most of all for your prayers. I am looking forward to a day in the future with no closings and the ability to see everyone's smile again. We want to remain positive for you and the community.

God bless each of you.

Letter: chiggers in the blackberry patch

By Joyce Coomer

You know, as many hundreds of times that I have walked through batches of Queen Anne's lace, I have never gotten -- nor seen -- a chigger.

However, picking blackberries is a whole other story!!!!! Only time I didn't get chiggers when picking blackberries was the one time I picked as many ticks off me (while I was picking blackberries) as I was getting blackberries off the vines.

Kentucky Supreme Court rules in Gov. Beshear's favor

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - Gov. Andy Beshear on Friday announced that the Kentucky Supreme Court has kept in place all executive orders related to the fight against COVID-19, including the mask order, until the court can hear full arguments from the Beshear administration and the attorney general's office and issue a final ruling.

"As many of you are aware, the attorney general had filed a motion to try to void every single order that had been put out to fight this pandemic," the Governor said. "That would mean every single set of rules that keep people safe, but that also means workers' compensation for our first responders when they've gotten quarantined because they've gotten the virus or been exposed to the virus. It was also almost every bit of flexibility we've been able to offer to our schools during this pandemic."

Early this morning, a Boone Circuit Court Judge was expected to sign an injunction nullifying many of Gov. Beshear's executive orders on COVID-19. The attorney general challenged the orders put in place to protect Kentucky lives, keep Kentucky from losing more than $10 billion in the economy and to help schools safely reopen this fall.

In an order issued this afternoon by unanimous decision, the Supreme Court stated, "Given the need for a clear and consistent statewide public health policy and recognizing that the Kentucky legislature has expressly given the Governor broad executive powers in a public health emergency, the court orders a stay of all orders of injunctive relief until such time as the various orders are properly before the court with a full record of any evidence and pleadings considered by the lower courts."

Gov. Beshear commended the Supreme Court's decision.

Many national retailers are requiring masks

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

In his Friday announcements, Governor Beshear highlighted many national retailers and small businesses that are now requiring customers to wear masks while shopping to protect the health and safety of all customers and staff members.

Kroger, an invaluable partner in the commonwealth's testing efforts, announced their decision on Wednesday.

"We fully support the executive order from last week here in Kentucky, and have been working closely with our store teams to take every reasonable effort to ensure customer and associate compliance," said Kroger Corporate Affairs Manager Erin Grant. "We remain committed to continually evaluating our preventive measures to help protect the safety and health of associates, customers and communities."

Kroger joins many other national retailers now requiring masks in all stores, including: American Eagle and Aerie, Apple, AT&T, Best Buy, BJ's Wholesale, Costco, CVS, Harris Teeter, H-E-B, Kohl's, Menards, Publix, Sam's Club, Starbucks, Target, Verizon, Walgreens and Walmart, the world's largest retailer. Trader Joe's also requests that all customers wear face masks; Whole Foods requests that customers wear masks and provides masks at their entrances for those who do not have one.
