Letter: Thanks for a peaceful, respectful protest

David Pyles writes:

Thanks to Eric Peterson for the peaceful demonstration. It was a chance for us to have our voices heard. It was a good crowd and respectful.

Passersby were calm with none of the commotion of other places.

June 13, 1980 Around Adair with Ed Waggener

The article below first appeared in the June 13, 1980 issue of the Daily Statesman. Topics included local politics, a local cleanup project by the FFA and Kiwanis Club, the beach at Holmes Bend, inflation, bottled milk and pool room hamburgers. --Pen

How do the Adair County courthouse officials rate?
In town folks have their opinion. And at Absher, at the Bait Shop, folks have their opinion.

Tommy Thornton, the Egyptian troubadour, has ideas on the subject and isn't afraid to share them. On the subject of the courthouse officials, Thornton had the following comments:
  • Bill Ballou (Circuit Court Clerk) - "He's a corker."
  • Billy Neat (Property Valuation Administrator) - "He's one of those fellows who aims to tell the truth." (Thornton doesn't say whether he hits the truth or not, but he says Neat aims at it.)
  • Judge James Brock - "I don't know him." Neither does Thornton know Judge Myer Garner or Sheriff Jimmy Firquin.
  • Ray Hutchison (County Attorney) - "He's my buddy. He's above the rest (as an attorney). He once saved me $1,000."
  • Jailer Neagle - "Him and me've been buddies several years."
  • Bob White (County Court Clerk) - "He's alright, too."
Thornton won't hesitate to tell you about his neighbors. Neighbor Bobby Hutchison, he says, he admires. "He's a businessfied man," says Thornton. But another fellow out there in Egypt he won't call by name. "He's alright," Thornton says, "but he's mighty blusty. He thinks he owns all of Adair County."

Have you noticed the trash receptacles on Columbia's Public Square? They're freshly painted a quiet beige color. The painting was done by the Future Farmers of America at Adair County High, under the direction of the FFA sponsor, Norman Grant.

Letter: Twin Trees

Charles Marshburn writes:
Isn't it strange how two people can look at the same thing and see something totally different? I see Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee! Ain't the fault of any tree! --Charles
Comments re: Letter: The photo of the two beech trees

Charles, thank you for sharing your vision of what's happening under those twin beech trees. Always interesting to have different view points of what can be made of the same picture.

113 Years Ago Today: The Gradyville Flood

An Event That Shall Never Be Forgotten in Adair County. 21 Lives Lost in Mere Minutes

By Mike Watson

This is the anniversary of the catastrophic Gradyville Flood. Every year we stop and remember and to reflect upon this great loss, the earthly end of so many, that changed the course of the community forever. Much has been written of the event. The following two articles, from neighboring county papers, are presented here as a memorial.

A Horrible Catastrophe-- Young Johnston Flood Visits Gradyville, Kentucky. Twenty-one Lives Snuffed out in a Moment--Senator Nell's Great Loss
Last Friday night a cloud burst in the valley of Big Creek, Adair County, almost destroyed the town of Gradyville. Several families being wiped out. Ex-Senator Nell lost his home and all his family, five in number. Senator Nell would have perished also but for the fact that he was away visiting a patient, being a physician.

All day long Sunday daring workers burrowed among the drift piles in search of the five bodies which remain unfound. The search lasted into the night, and sorrow-stricken parents and kinfolk were compelled by darkness to give up the search until another sun, work beginning early next morning, in an attack on the drifts.

The desolation of the little hamlet is complete. While half the dwellings remain, and one general store, all other business enterprises were completely wiped out, and one-tenth of the total population was drowned. There has never been anything like a high stage of water before in Big Creek, and never has even the cellar of a house been inundated. The disaster came in an hour, was gone in an hour, leaving desolation, bereavement and poverty in its wake.
