Letter: The photo of the two beech trees

George Kolbenschlag writes:
There is something about Linda's photo of the beech trees that really caught my attention. Maybe it's because the two trees look like twins, born (or is it planted) many years ago in Middle Earth. I can envision Bilbo and Frodo Baggins sitting under those trees with their other Hobbit friends. If you will tell me where the trees are, I'd like to see them live. --George
Comments re: Balance

George, thank you for noting the gravity of the twin beeches framing the beyond. If you're called to go there, start on the Public Square in Columbia, the heart of everywhere, and go north on Hwy 55, through the red light by UCB, then take the first right, Hwy 551/Knifley Road. Continue until you have the option to veer right onto Hwy 1323/Bull Run Road which will ultimately return you to Hwy 206/Fairground Street, Columbia.

You're getting close, going this direction down Bull Run Road, you'll find the twin beeches on your left, not far after you've passed the Vester Road turn off. Very likely the trees will call to you when you get near them and you'll know you're there. If you spot Bilbo and Frodo, please ask them kindly for permission to take a picture for Columbia Magazine. Being Hobbits, they'll want to decline, but we believe in asking. - LW

Sunday peaceful demonstration: Nine Minutes at Nine

Eric Peterson of Adair County writes:

We would like to invite everyone in the Adair County community to join together with us on the Public Square in Columbia Sunday morning, June 7, 2020 at 9amCT in a peaceful demonstration against hatred, racism and violence.

We will share 9 minutes of silence to remember the 9 minutes George Floyd was held to the ground as he was murdered.

Please wear a mask. You can also show your unity with us from inside your vehicle; consider parking on the square and flashing your hazard lights for the nine minutes.
In honoring George Floyd, Kentucky's own Breonna Taylor, and the countless others who died under the oppression of racism, we stand in unity with our brothers and sisters of color. We will listen and hear their voices, and we will share in their cries for justice.

Have you requested your absentee ballot yet?

The primary election is now just over two weeks away, and Kentucky Republicans and Democrats will be choosing candidates for President and for US Senator, where eight Republicans and ten Democrats are vying for the seat currently held by Mitch McConnell.

In-person voting on election day will be limited to a single location in Adair County, and the State Board of Elections has greatly expanded the ways that voters can vote by absentee ballot for the primary.

Officials are asking voters to vote by absentee ballot in the June primary if at all possible. If you are a registered voter, you can request your mail-in absentee ballot online in just a couple of minutes at sos.ky.gov.

Adair County residents can also request an absentee ballot by emailing Adair Co. Clerk Lisa Greer at Lisa.Greer@ky.gov. You should include your full name, date of birth, your mailing address, and your cell/home phone in the email.

More information about the upcoming primary is available here: 2020 Primary Election Information.
