Kendyl Burton takes top honors at state STLP competition

By Robin Hancock, ACES STLP Coach

STLP stands for State Technology Leadership Program and is an organization that promotes leadership through the use of technology. Each year STLP holds a state competition in Lexington at Rupp Arena, however this year it was held online due to social distancing guidelines.

In February 2020, Kendyl Burton, daughter of Chris and Lisa Burton, submitted digital projects along with other members of the Adair County Elementary School STLP. In March, she was notified by the State STLP that she was a semi-finalist for her graphic art submission titled, "Together- We Are Everything." Graphic art entries are judged on originality and creativity, art elements, and how those art elements present the theme of the piece. As well, Kendyl wrote a process of how she created her graphic art piece and credited the software she used.

Just this month, Kendyl was notified that she was a finalist in the State STLP competition for the Graphic Art/Elementary category. When winners were announced, Kendyl's work was awarded second in the state out of all participating elementary schools.

When asked about her inspiration, Kendyl said, "I knew I needed to be really creative in my design, and I wanted to promote the idea that everyone should be accepted for who they are."

Letter: Are we getting lakadasical?

By Joyce M. Coomer

I'm noticing in posted photos -- current photos -- on various news and social sites that people aren't practicing social distancing. I have also noticed more than one adult -- AND children -- from one family shopping in stores.

Some people are wearing masks and gloves, some aren't but that worries me less as I can always keep my distance and handle only things I need than does seeing people grouped up tightly in public places.

Even having fewer COVID-19 cases in the past few days, that doesn't mean we can let down our guard. -- Joyce

ACSO: Cyclist airlifted from scene of accident

By Sheriff Josh Brockman
Adair County Sheriff's Office

On Thursday, May 7, 2020, at 4:31pmCT, the Adair County Sheriff's Office was dispatched by Adair 911 to a reported accident on KY 551 at the Holmes Bend Road intersection, where a cyclist had been struck by a vehicle. Upon arrival, emergency services personnel quickly realized it was one of their own.

Preliminary investigation indicates that 27 year old Hannah Morales--who is employed by Adair County EMS--was riding her bike on KY 551 toward Columbia with the right of way.

Ernesto Martinez, 42, of Columbia, was operating a 1999 Chevrolet truck on KY 551 heading north. Martinez was making a left hand turn attempting to merge onto Homes Bend Road, and failed to see Morales on the road as she was approaching Holmes Bend Road. Martinez struck Morales.

EMS worked to stabilize Morales on scene to prepare her for flight as Air Evac was called to land at the scene. She was air-lifted by Air Evac to University of Lexington, where she was listed in critical condition.

Carol Perkins: Normal is coming, sometime

Previous Column: Pest Control

By Carol Perkins

I have not been inside a store since the virus began. Guy does the shopping while I sit in the car and watch people, wishing I could see my friends and have lunch as we usually did. Because of the lower number of cases in Monroe County, the last two grocery trips have been to their Wal-Mart.

On the way to Tompkinsville this week, I saw a familiar sign. "Guy, have you ever been to Rockbridge?"

"What's at Rockbridge?"

"A greenhouse."

He shook his head. "You surely don't want any more flowers. There isn't a pot on the property you haven't stuck something in! Besides, it's going to freeze this weekend." The poor man has dug so many holes to plant peony bulbs, sixty gladiolus bulbs, a butterfly bush, and the tulip tree that the moles are confused.

Principal's Thoughts, spring 2020 - Debbie Bradshaw

By Debbie Bradshaw, Principal
Adair County Primary Center

Who would have ever guessed that March 12th would be the last day of our 2019-2020 school year to see our ACPC students face to face?

The abrupt change COVID brought meant the important things we took for granted halted: sharing silly classroom moments, giving hugs, eating lunch together, celebrating together, but most importantly, saying our goodbyes in person.

Cat tales - the mysterious travelers

This cat adventure comes from the family of Adair County Magistrate Billy Dean Coffey and describes heroic efforts to rescue stowaways in the car.

By Jackie Coffey

You might call this a Cat Tale!

I went to visit a friend I go to Church with and was gone about an hour and a half.

When I got home Billy and my grandson were resting on the car porch as they had been filling flower pots with dirt for me to set out my flowers.

We were talking and started hearing a cat meowing. We'd had a cat to come here a few months ago and she had three kittens about three weeks ago.

Teacher's Thoughts spring semester 2020 - Angie Hixson

By Angie Hixson, 1st Grade Teacher
Adair County Primary Center

Thoughts as a teacher through this quarantine - This semester has been the most trying time in 27 years as an educator.

If I had known on March 13th that it was the last day I would see, hug, and listen to their sweet stories, I would have hugged a little tighter, and listened a little harder.

I think back to that last day a lot. I ask myself, did I take time to smile at each child?

Did I say good-bye to each one at the end of the day?

This weighs on my heart. My hope is that each one of my kids know how much I love them and treasure our time together.

While this was not an ideal time, I'm so thankful for the memories we made together, and the life lessons my kids have made with their families that can never be forgotten.

(All our teachers and staff are invited to share thoughts about the 2020 spring semester - the time the Coronavirus changed school.)

LWC: 2019-20 Honors Convocation Award Recipients

Click headline for story with all of this year's award winners

By Venus Popplewell

The annual honors convocation ceremony had to be cancelled, but LWC faculty, staff and administration found other ways to honor more than five dozen individuals for academic achievement during the 2019-20 academic year.

LWC business administration senior Jakob Beckley of Pleasureville, Ky., received the President's Award, which is presented to the graduating senior who in the opinion of the LWC president best embodies the LWC mission.

Zane Garner, a political science junior from Burkesville, Ky., was named as a returning John B. Begley Scholar. The John B. Begley Scholarship is the college's most prestigious undergraduate scholarship.

LWC Instructor of Religion and Chaplain Troy Elmore was named Teacher of the Year by the LWC SGA; and Director of Learning Delivery and Design Dennis Robinson received the Commitment to Excellence in Education Award.

The LWC Singers were named the top student organization by the LWC Student Government Association. For more than 20 years, the Lindsey Wilson Singers have toured throughout the United States and Europe, giving concerts in more than three dozen states and six countries. Members of the Lindsey Wilson Singers often credit the tours as life-changing experiences. The LWC Singers are directed by Associate Professor of Music Gerald Chafin.

LWC found alternate ways to honor students and seniors

By Venus Popplewell

The 2019-20 academic year at Lindsey Wilson College came to a close last week. Because of restrictions due to the coronavirus pandemic, all senior events and award ceremonies were cancelled. However, LWC found alternative ways to recognize students for excellence and service.

More than five dozen individuals were honored by the 117-year-old liberal arts college for academic achievement during the 2019-20 academic year. The annual honors convocation ceremony was cancelled but LWC faculty, staff and administration made the most of a challenging situation by placing personal phone calls to each of the award recipients and LWC President William T. Luckey Jr., recorded a message congratulating the top students that were recognized.

Also cancelled was the College's annual senior banquet. LWC posted a video on May 1 of what would have been the eve of the 111th commencement ceremony. Students watched recorded messages from the President of the LWC National Alumni Association Drew Sadler, Alumni Director Hannah Peck, LWC President William T. Luckey Jr., and senior class officers Gracie Kurtz from Brooksville Ky., and Molly Carnall from Shepherdsville, Ky.

Letter: Watch for Bears?

Maury Lewis writes:
Driving down 55 South somewhere around Road Side Park is a printed sigh in BOLD RED LETTERS and it reads "WATCH FOR BEARS". Have bears been seen there, or is there another reason for the sign? --melewi
Comments re: KDFW: Most problems involving bears are preventable

Maury, thanks for writing -- we're not sure how that sign came to be posted. Based on the map from KDFW, Hwy 55 South would be the route from Adair County into Resident Bear Range, although we can't remember seeing those signs at any other Russell County boundary. Hopefully a reader can chime in with more information. --Pen.
