Teacher's Thoughts, spring semester 2020: Susan Peck

By Susan Peck, Chemistry teacher at ACHS

I was in high school during the late 70's when we missed most of January and February due to snow (I think we went a couple of days the whole two months.)

I remember how I missed going to school, seeing my friends and became very bored at home (The only technology was a TV on an antenna.)

The last 6 weeks remind me of that time except now we are wearing masks and avoiding crowds. While NTI school work is sufficient, it is not the same as discussing and seeing Chemistry live in a classroom full of other students.

Also for all the senior students, I just hate that they missed spring sports, prom and all the traditional graduation activities. -Susan

(All our teachers and staff are invited to share thoughts about the 2020 spring semester - the time the Coronavirus changed school.)

Lindsey Wilson College Recognizes the Class of 2020

By Venus Popplewell

Spring commencement Saturday looked very different this year at Lindsey Wilson College.

The college president was there with the school's beloved mascot, the victory bell rang out in recognition of the celebration, the sun was shining, but long gone were the students. It has been eight weeks since classes at LWC transitioned to a fully-online format and students were required to leave campus housing.

"It's an absolutely beautiful day here on the campus of Lindsey Wilson College," said LWC President William T. Luckey Jr., via a recorded message to graduates posted on the College's social media accounts. "It could only be more beautiful and special if you were here and we were actually able to (have commencement) together. But I did want to give a shout out and let you know I'm thinking about you today, and I'm just so excited and grateful and thankful you chose to invest your precious time and talent and resources here at Lindsey Wilson College."

Restrictions caused by the coronavirus pandemic required the 117-year-old liberal arts college to postpone a commencement ceremony for the first time in college history.

By Sean Southard

Frankfort, KY - Agriculture Commissioner Dr. Ryan Quarles announced the donation of more than 560,000 eggs from Cal-Maine Foods to Feeding Kentucky as part of the Kentucky Department of Agriculture's Hunger Initiative.

"Kentucky agriculture continues to step up to the plate to fight hunger during the coronavirus pandemic," said Agriculture Commissioner Dr. Ryan Quarles. "Thanks to Cal-Maine Foods, more vulnerable Kentuckians have access to fresh, nutritious eggs."

Feeding Kentucky's seven member food banks serve all 120 Kentucky counties in partnership with a network of over 800 local food pantries and shelters. The organization reached an estimated 1 in 7 of all Kentuckians each year. Members in 2019 distributed 86 million pounds of food and grocery products, which was enough to supply 72 million meals for those in need.

A birthday memory: Lardy Lordy Taffy candy making

Birthday Girl Jean Cravens who celebrates nine decades of life today, May 5, 2020, shared the memory below about her big brother Arthur Lee Waggener and their early life on Jamestown Hill in Columbia:

A lot of the kids from my time growing up on Jamestown Hill probably remember Arthur Lee's efforts at making taffy. Candy bars, even at a nickel a bar, were an out of reach luxury for most of the neighborhood kids. So it was that when Arthur Lee made his first batch of taffy, there were eager takers when he offered to share.

It wasn't the usual taffy experience. It had a whole different texture, and almost made you swallow quickly whether you were wanting to savor longer or not. In fact, everyone commented on how slippery it was.

Later, the reason came out. The recipe called for Crisco, but Mother was out. Arthur improvised with lard, and that's what made it so slippery, we decided. Didn't matter. We were craving anything sugary, and his lardy-lordy-taffy had plenty of that, and was quickly devoured.
