Announcing the Adair County Coronavirus History Project

By Mike Watson

The Adair County Public Library and the Local History and Genealogy Section have begun the task of documenting this time in our county and town. We ask each of you to send us your thoughts on your Pandemic Experience.

The goal of this project is to record the essence of the time as it happens. Eventually this historic period will be studied and histories written. We must build an historical record now so that future generations will not soon forget our plight, our fears, our grief, our beliefs, our hope for the future, as well as our learning experiences as we forge into a new era.

We look for your thoughts on how this time has impacted your family, business, faith, learning environment, and other priorities.

Contributions do not have to be long. A sentence, a paragraph, or more. Thoughts on specific events or experiences are what is needed. And photographs as well. If each person will send something, there will be hundreds of records for a historian to review, when all this is literally in the past and the time to write the history of Adair County in the Pandemic has arrived.

History Monday: The Adair Guards, 1860

By Mike Watson

Every family has one or more Civil War stories. Actions around Columbia and Adair County were more common than most may think. There were no battles, as such, closer than Mill Springs and Perryville. There were, however, skirmishes and engagements of small stature all around us.

Few people know that before the War, before the election of 1860, the results of which propelled the nation into the conflict that would touch every family in the nation, there was an elite military group in Adair County.

The militia was a para-military organization as old as Kentucky herself. Adair County, like every other county, had militia units that were to be prepared for the defense of the town and county, the state and nation, upon prompt notice.

The Adair Guards was such a local unit. It was small, but contained dedicated men who promised to do the proper and correct thing in time of emergency. The following is an excerpt of a long article from the Louisville Daily Courier of 11 July 1860 on the celebration of July 4th in Adair County:

Statewide winners include Lane Kelsay, a fifth grader at Adair County Elementary

By Sean Southard

Frankfort, KY - Kentucky Agriculture Commissioner Dr. Ryan Quarles announced the winners of the Kentucky Department of Agriculture's annual Poster and Essay Contest. The theme of the 2020 contest was "Kentucky Farmers: Ready, Set, Grow."

"Congratulations to each of these winners, who so vividly depicted in art and writing how our farmers all across the state are helping to grow the safest, most abundant food supply in the world," Commissioner Quarles said. Governor urges vigilance as KY takes first reopening step

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - On Sunday, Gov. Andy Beshear asked Kentuckians to remain vigilant in the fight against the novel coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) as the state takes an initial step toward reopening certain health care operations Monday.

"Tomorrow is the first day since this virus hit that instead of adding restrictions, we are reopening some areas," the Governor said. "We are starting with health care for some very simple reasons. First, people have not been able to go in to some types of visits and important appointments to keep themselves healthy. And people can grow unhealthy or have other issues that are unrelated to COVID-19.

"Second, we need to get our health care industry moving again because as we want to test more people we will need our health care industry to be operating at a greater level to make that happen. And third, in thinking about how to do this gradually in a way that protects people, in a way that we can always take a temperature as we move forward, health care is the place to start."

Gov. Beshear says the phased reopening of health care services is the first step under the Healthy at Work initiative he introduced to help businesses restart operations safely when the time is right.
