Reply to Larry Smith's Green River picture Comments re: Big Rock at Green River By George Rice When I first saw Larry Smith's picture of the big rock on Green River it caught my attention. Born and raised almost in the river at the scene of now Holmes Been Boat Dock, I have many cherished memories of the river before back waters covered our home and farm land. The Fisher Ford crossing upstream from the boat dock used to be a gathering place for Sunday afternoon swimming and picnicking. There was a long gravel bar the entire length of the hole of water that made a perfect place for get together. Down stream just a little way was a ferry that Joe Trayler moved here from the Cumberland River that farmers used to move their farm equipment across the river when the water was too high to cross. In my younger days (as old men always talk about, or when I was a boy, actually what else can old men talk about), I have traveled Green River all the way from downtown Liberty to the mouth of Russell Creek a distance below Greensburg. Yes Larry is correct to comment on the beauty to been seen on Green River. 2020-04-25 20:54:55 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Letters and Reader Feedback

Big Rock at Green River near the Taylor/Green County line By Larry Smith I took a Saturday morning boat ride up the Green River. I've always been fascinated with the river and how our county lines were drawn between Green & Taylor Counties in the river and so accurately. "Horseshoe Bend" splits the two counties, and after more than 200 years, people still know the exact location. Every inch of the Green River has such significant history, such as the "danger zone" area, where several boaters and swimmers have perished, to goods being shipped up and down the river in the old days. Green River is truly a paradise, and until you've seen the river from a boat ride you'll never know its true beauty. 2020-04-25 19:49:57 | Comments | Printable version
Governor: Safe Reopening Requires Patience, Planning and Perseverance By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen Frankfort, KY - On Saturday, Gov. Andy Beshear said Kentuckians must stay vigilant in the fight against the novel coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) in the commonwealth, even as we begin the first small step toward reopening on Monday. "We will get through this; we will get through this together," Gov. Beshear said. "The first step was sacrifice. Now we have to plan and be patient. Last, we'll need to persevere. This is going to be a challenge until a vaccine comes around, but I know our people are up for it." Unemployment insurance The Governor said those who applied for unemployment in March should expect to hear from somebody this week. He said this is his administration and everyone is working hard to respond to the claims, which are greater than at any time in our history. "I want to see significant progress on this this week and we will be providing updates," Gov. Beshear said. Montpelier Post Office & General Store building Jim puts eloquent voice to everyone's concerns about recent news (Letter: Montpelier General Store) By JIM In my nigh onto three-score and ten trips around the sun, I've learned a few -- perhaps painfully few -- things, one of which is that change occurs: sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse, sometimes of a necessity. The latter-named occasions this letter about the Montpelier Post Office and General Store building at Montpelier being razed. It had sadly been neglected for ages, the timbers and siding are so old it would take scarcely a spark to create an inferno within seconds. My mind gets that. My heart doesn't. The grand old structure has been a landmark for all my years and many years beyond. For decades, the store served as the business and secular center for miles around, and in the fashion of the times, it carried everything from brogans to buckboards. Adams offers details on plan for June 23 Election By Miranda Combs Frankfort, KY - Secretary of State Michael Adams is proud to offer details of his agreement with Governor Andy Beshear on the methods of voting to be used in the June 23 primary election. "This plan fulfills my promise to make it easy to vote and hard to cheat," said Adams. "Through expanding absentee voting - with appropriate safeguards - limiting the number of polling sites, and adopting in-person voting methods that limit personal contact, we prevent Mother Nature from disenfranchising Kentucky voters, while we also protect the lives of both our voters and our poll workers." "This plan is not vote-by-mail, West Coast-style," Adams continued. "This plan has ballot integrity built in, and for the first time in a decade cleans up our voter rolls, a signal accomplishment." Here are the plan's key points: Article continues... click title or click here to read whole article. 2020-04-25 08:19:35 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Politics
Letter: Voting by mail Ann Pearson writes: I see no matter what the people of KY want the Gov appears determined to have our elections by mail. He wanted it done by mail and his order got a veto and KY was set to require an ID to vote and now he's over ridden that and again set it up to vote by mail. If we can stand in line at WalMart, the liquor store, the tobacco store and etc then why can't we show an ID and vote the same way. Is it only dangerous if we vote in person but safe to do everything else in person? Many politicians seem determined to make sure an ID is not required to vote and yet you must show one to get a bank account, buy tobacco, alcohol and etc but no ID is required for voting in our elections; why is that? --AnnComments re: Voting by mail approved for June elections 2020-04-25 08:17:39 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Letters and Reader Feedback
