Phase 1 health care services will begin reopening Monday

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - On Thursday, Gov. Andy Beshear announced that Monday, April 27, the state will begin the gradual restart and reopening of our Phase 1 health care services and facilities, although they will operate vastly different than they did before the outbreak of the novel coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19).

"To do this safely, make sure you are going above and beyond. This is our proof of concept in the medical community. We have to prove that we can do this the right way," Gov. Beshear said.

On March 23, Gov. Beshear signed an executive order ceasing all elective procedures to limit the spread of COVID-19 and increase hospital capacity to treat patients.

Thanks to Team Kentucky's extraordinary efforts to flatten the curve up to this point, Gov. Beshear and the Department for Public Health feel safe easing some restrictions on health care procedures and facilities.

Commentary: Thoughts From a Rural Kentucky Legislator

Personal political commentary/opinions of the writer

By State Senator Max Wise, (R-Campbellsville)
16th District: Adair, Clinton, Cumberland, McCreary, Russell, Taylor, and Wayne Counties

Is it possible to be concerned about public health, public safety, and the economy all at once? Is it true that someone must choose only one of those three sectors? Can we not be attentive to all three? Can COVID-19 be taken seriously while being reasonable in our response? These are questions that I have grappled with, and I'm sure countless others have over the past several weeks, especially since many neighboring states are starting to loosen economic restrictions.

I want to begin by saying that I do not envy the position in which Governor Andy Beshear finds himself. I have given him credit for how he has handled this pandemic to date. He has followed the ever-evolving White House recommendations as they have attempted to prepare us for the worst.

Do not delay urgent medical treatment due to COVID-19

By Stacey Biggs

While government leaders, healthcare providers, and the news media have all strongly encouraged citizens to stay at home and to call before seeking care, there is concern that patients are choosing to delay emergency medical treatment out of fear of exposure to the virus.

A decrease in visits to the Emergency Department is to be expected with more people staying safe at home, fewer vehicles on the road, and fewer accidents happening in the workplace. However, heart attacks, strokes, and other acute illnesses are still occurring and patients should not hesitate to seek care when they are experiencing those types of symptoms.

"We are seeing a concerning trend right now," said Neil Thornbury, CEO of T.J. Regional Health. "Patients are waiting longer to come to the ER to seek treatment for medical emergencies such as chest pains and stroke like symptoms. Delaying treatment for true medical emergencies could have devastating consequences."

Feeding Kentucky purchases Kentucky ground beef

By Sean Southard

Frankfort, KY - Feeding Kentucky has purchased 3,408 pounds of Kentucky ground beef with funds from Kentucky Farm Bureau Insurance's historic half-million dollar donation as part of Agriculture Commissioner Dr. Ryan Quarles' Kentucky Hunger Initiative. The purchase translates into more than 13,000 4-ounce hamburger patties that will go to vulnerable Kentuckians during the coronavirus pandemic.

"Hunger doesn't stop during a global pandemic - in fact, it gets worse," Commissioner Quarles said. "While Kentucky's processors have largely remained operational, facility closures in other states have eroded market prices for cattle producers and the National Cattlemen's Beef Association estimates $13.6 billion in potential economic damage to the nation's cattle sector. Kentucky cattle producers are incredibly grateful to Feeding Kentucky and Kentucky Farm Bureau Insurance for making this purchase possible."
