Dakota Smith writes, "Hello, Adair County. We are continuing our postcards from Lindsey with George and Vonnie Kolbenschlag. They have been host parents for 30 years! Their favorite thing about being host parents is that they learn more than they teach and the lifelong friendships! They have hosted at least one international student every year since the program began. In fact, they had several before there was a formal program!"

Phased restart Monday with limited health care services

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - Gov. Andy Beshear announced Wednesday that the phased restart of Kentucky's economy will begin next week, on Monday, with a segment of the health care services industry.

He said initially the easing of restrictions will allow for diagnostic and radiology testing, as well as non-urgent, emergent, in-person office and ambulatory visits.

"We are very close to coming to a consensus and an agreement in being able to put out guidelines for the gradual reopening of many of our hospital and health care services," Gov. Beshear said. "We will be moving from this phase to others. Health care is a good and important place to start some of our reopening."

The Governor said Kentucky will go through three phases in dealing with coronavirus: sacrifice, planning and patience and perseverance. The Governor said now we are in the planning and patience phase.

A few CU students staying on campus during pandemic

By Scarlett Birge

Campbellsville, KY - "I don't have the resources at home to finish my semester," freshman Fabiola Gonzalez Luna, of Glasgow, KY, said.

Gonzalez Luna is among the 21 female students, 14 male students and 5 students in overflow housing left on Campbellsville University's main campus, and she is staying to ensure her course work is accomplished.

In light of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, many universities have completely shut down their residential halls and sent home the students who were living on campus.

However, this may not be a viable option for all. For many reasons, some students have been forced to stay on campus because there are no other choices.

Letter: Larry Smith Photo

Joe Hare writes:
Great group of photos. I see what appears to be a cable in the photo of the boat on the river, also the two people in the buggy patiently sitting. This makes me wonder if that was a ferry across Green River vs traveling up river. Maybe Larry could help.

Just an inquiring mind with not much to do. LOL --Joe

Letter: Would love a picture of town square clock

Kristi Thrasher writes:
My grandmother was from Columbia, and I would love a picture of the town square clock. Or a picture of cemetery. Both my grandparents buried under tree. Cages and Edith Coomer. Would love to buy a picture of that if possible. Kristi, kristithrasher@yahoo.com
Kristi, thanks for writing. There are tons of pictures of the courthouse clock in our archives, although they're probably not big enough for printing. We've included your contact info in hopes that some of Columbia's terrific local photographers will have something suitable. --Pen

KSP recognizes Crime Victims Rights Week

By Sergeant Josh Lawson

Frankfort, KY - April 19-25 is National Crime Victims' Rights Week, a time set aside to raise awareness for victims' rights and services, and celebrate the progress victim advocates are making. This year's theme is "Seek Justice, Ensure Victims' Rights, Inspire Hope".

In the fall, Kentucky State Police employed sixteen victim advocates to provide support services and resources to crime victims across the Commonwealth. KSP is among the first state police agencies to implement this program on a statewide basis.

The program, called Victim Advocate Support Services (VASS), launched in the fall of 2019 with a dual purpose. Advocates administer care to crime victims - or those involved in traumatic events - connecting them with immediate resources, such as mental health services, crisis intervention or legal support. These skilled professionals also serve as liaisons between law enforcement and the victim, simultaneously helping victims navigate the system while allowing detectives to focus more on the details of the case.

Governor announces Healthy at Work initiative

Phased approach to reopening aims to give workers and employers tools to restart business safely when time is right.

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - - Gov. Andy Beshear on Tuesday announced the launch of "Healthy at Work," a new initiative to help Kentucky businesses reopen safely as we fight the novel coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19).

The Governor has urged all Kentuckians to remain Healthy at Home, following federal and state guidelines on social distancing and limiting contacts. However, Kentucky families and businesses also must prepare for the day when we begin to reopen our economy.

"We want to make sure that when we hit that mark, knowing that we may only know five days in, that we're ready and that when it is safe to do something, we can immediately start doing it," the Governor said.

But he warned against opening up too soon.

"When we look at the long-term reopening of the economy, we do it by not being foolish or making risky decisions," Gov. Beshear said. "It's how we come out of this strong."

Healthy at Work offers a phased approach to reopening Kentucky's economy.
