Governor: Schools should remain closed to in-person instruction

Says move is in-line with health professionals' advice, White House guidance

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - Gov. Andy Beshear on Monday advised the commonwealth's education leaders to keep facilities closed to in-person instruction for the rest of the school year.

"Every health care professional has advised us that this is the right course of action to take," the Governor said of the state's continuing efforts to stop the spread of the novel coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19).

Gov. Beshear noted that same advice was being followed in many states, including Ohio, Indiana and Tennessee.

He said the move is in line with newly released guidelines from the White House as well as Kentucky's own newly announced benchmarks that the commonwealth must meet in order to start reopening the state's economy while keeping Kentuckians safe from the novel coronavirus.

Community Helping Community

By Corey Patterson, Health Environmentalist III
Adair County Health Department

Adair County has a longstanding reputation of coming together to meet needs within the community. With the growing number of COVID-19 cases in Adair County, we have seen a need arise. You see, when a person tests positive for COVID-19 or are a direct contact of a positive case, they are asked to isolate or self-quarantine so they do not spread the virus to others.

While under this quarantine/isolation, many persons are unable to obtain needed food and supplies for themselves or their family. The Adair County Health Department in collaboration with Adair County Judge Executive Gale Cowan, Adair County Emergency Manager Mike Keltner, Adair County Ministerial Association, Columbia Mayor Pam Hoots, 3Trees Church and J.O.Y. Ministries has developed a plan to help those confirmed cases and contacts in need. J.O.Y. Ministries (and other partners as needed) will task themselves with obtaining what is needed for each identified case. The case must meet the criteria of being under direction of isolation or quarantine by the Lake Cumberland District Health Department.

How can the community help?
The Adair County community can help by donating money to J.O.Y Ministries for the aid of these specific cases. How can a person donate? They can do so by mail (J.O.Y Ministries, P.O. Box 114, Columbia, KY 42728) or via PAYPAL at www.joy-ministries.org (please designate COVID-19 on your donation in notes section).

This need exists presently, as we are already fulfilling requests. We want to help those that are staying isolated or quarantined so that the spread of this virus does not happen.

Drive-thru COVID-19 testing at T.J. Primary Care in Columbia

By Stacey Biggs

Drive-thru testing for COVID-19 is now available at T.J. Primary Care located on Jamestown Street in Columbia. Patients will only be tested with an order from their provider. Testing availability is still limited at this time, and only patients who meet specific CDC criteria will qualify for an order to test.

In order to ensure the health and safety of patients and team members, the following process must be followed:
  • If the patient meets the CDC guidelines for testing, the patient's provider will send an order for the test directly to the T.J. Columbia Primary Care office. Important: Patients will not be tested at the drive-thru location without an order received from their provider.
  • Patients will proceed to the drive-thru area, and they must remain in their vehicle. Clinical staff will be expecting the patient's arrival.
  • A clinician will come to the vehicle to perform the test. It is performed using a nasal swab and takes only a few seconds.
  • The patient will then be instructed to quarantine at home until they receive test results.
  • Patients tested at the drive-thru will be notified of the results in approximately 24-72 hours by the provider who ordered the test or by other clinical staff.
"We are happy to provide this service which will be a great benefit to the community," said Neil Thornbury, CEO of T.J. Regional Health. "It is imperative that patients who utilize the drive-thru testing location follow the instructions and comply with their physician's orders."

ACHS Senior 2020: Thoughts and thanks from Jenna Rodgers

Thank you for everyone supporting us through this pandemic. Remember one thing... after the plague came the Renaissance.

By Jenna Rodgers

Ever since my 6th grade year I have had a board labeled ‘senior year’ with the following things pinned to it: the perfect prom dress, wildflower bouquet, senior baseball poses, DIY graduation caps, senior prank ideas, senior skip day activities, spirit week outfits, and the perfect gifts for graduation parties.

That’s the year that I started taking Senior pictures.

For seven years I’ve dreamed up the perfect plan for my last year of High School.

History Monday: In Times of Need

By Mike Watson

Our town and county, along with the state and nation, are struggling with the dread virus that strikes the old, infirm, and compromised among our citizenry. We can only take proper precautions and distance ourselves from the possibly infected, and continue to pray for deliverance. There are many, however, who are literally on the front line in this war with disease. In recent weeks we have seen many step up to help provide protections, as much as is possible, from the spread of the corona-virus, by crafting masks to be distributed to those in need. For this, we should all be thankful, for it is to aid each and every one of us, almost certainly in indirect ways; and for some, such as medical workers, clerks, and so many more, it is a direct benefit that may very well save lives.

Citizens have always been in the fore-front offering support and material supplies in times of great need. There are many examples including:

During the Revolutionary War those who could not fight on the front lines often supplied material for the troops. Farmers and merchants were the greatest among these. Food, forage for horses, manufactured goods, and clothing were the most sought after supplies, in addition to money.

Many early settlers of Adair County provided Patriotic Service to the Continental Army and the Cause for Liberty; thus becoming the United States.

COVID-19 Adair: Four deaths, two more cases

By Adair County Judge Executive Gale Cowan

Sunday evening, April 19, 2020 -- Everyone please remember, Governor Beshear gets his numbers 2-3 days behind what we get daily. His numbers today (6 for Adair) would have to be a combination of several days for us. The information I give daily comes directly from the Lake Cumberland District Health Department. I will NOT report anything unless it has been verified from LCDHD.

Today is another sad day for us. Today we have two new cases. One is an employee of SMNH and the other is the spouse of another employee.

We also have to report our fourth death. A resident of SMNH.
