Carol Perkins: How hard can it be? Previous Column: The USS Guy Perkins By Carol Perkins My first thought when considering making masks was, "How hard can it be?" After all, I've been sewing since I was fourteen. Not skilled enough to sew for others, but enough to make most of my clothes back in the day. I tell this to show that I didn't set up my sewing machine on the kitchen table, make a pattern, and cut out fabric for masks without some level of skill. In other words, I asked myself, "How Hard Can It Be?!" To simplify my endeavor, I made a template according to measurements based on an online video I had watched last week. According to the pro and my memory, I was to cut the fabric 12" by 9" so that is what I did. I made the side closest to the face a different material. Lining up the back fabric and the front material should have been easy, but it wasn't. I was a little off and had to trim to even up the two layers. I then placed the elastic in the corners as directed and left a two-inch slit at the bottom to turn the mask inside out. The next step was to make the front pleats, so I followed the video again. The problem I noticed right away was that one side of the mask was wider than the other, which made the pleats crooked. I would keep that mask for myself. 4-H Summer Camp Update By Tony Rose Adair County Extension Agent for 4-H Youth Development An update has come from UK about the status of the 4-H Summer Camping Program for Adair County youth and volunteers. As of today, the 4-H Summer Camping Program has been suspended pending updated and timely information about the current COVID-19 pandemic. At this time, this doesn't mean camp is "cancelled," but an alternate schedule is being developed for the possibility of returning in July and August. This schedule will feature shorter sessions of camp (three day/two night formats), but this, like I said before, is based on resuming camp under the most appropriate, safe, and health-conscious recommendations from a number of entities, including UK, our State Government, and the CDC. As the schedule begins to form, I will supply additional information. Article continues... click title or click here to read whole article. 2020-04-17 11:14:36 | Comments | Printable version

Postcards from LWC: Tommie Ann Saragas By Sabine Eastham Lindsey Wilson College, International Student Program Meet Tommie Ann Saragas. Question: How long have you worked at LWC? Answer: 17 years Question: What is your favorite thing about LWC? Answer: The people...no doubt. I love our students, my team, the LWC leadership team, and our faculty and staff. Question: What's a fun fact about you? Answer: I "fake" played the alto saxophone for two years just so I could march in the band. My freshman year, for concert band, the director assigned me the tenor sax (by myself). I was happily pretending to play when the entire room went silent. Everyone turned and looked at me and then I realized that I had a solo. I couldn't read music or play the instrument....but, man, could I march. 2020-04-17 06:26:45 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Lindsey Wilson College

The luckiest person in the world In which frequent Columbia Magazine contributor Gary Rose is quick to recognize a modern variation of The Spanish Prisoner, but decides to play along with the con men and see where it goes. By Gary Rose I am the luckiest person in the world. On April 15, 2020, I received a call from Mr. Johnny Golden, representing Publishers Clearing House, saying that the prize committee was in the area. The caller ID came up "Unknown Number." I normally don't answer those calls, but after not answering the first time, it rang right away again. I figured is was someone trying to sell me something. Mr. Golden told me that I have won $100,000,000.00 (One Hundred Million dollars) and a 2020 Mercedes-Benz, and I had the choice of three colors, Red, Black, or White. Furthermore, I could have the option of a sunroof, and the car came with two years of insurance from GEICO prepaid and all of this was tax free. Mr. Golden went on to say that the Federal Reserve was going to do an electronic transfer of the money to my bank account, and all I had to do was to pay the prize registration fee of $750.00, and I would receive directions on how to pay it today.
