Columbia Christian Church services Sunday

By John Davis, Senior Minister
Columbia Christian Church

We would like all members and attenders to know that this upcoming Sunday, Columbia Christian Church will still be going forward with Sunday School at 9amCT and our Sunday worship gathering at 10amCT. Below are steps we are taking to minimize risks:
  • Extra cleaning and sterilizing of the worship area, youth areas, nursery, door handles, etc.
  • Hand sanitizer will be stationed at entrances. Please utilize it as you arrive.
  • Pre-packaged communion will be available at the entrances for each baptized believer to pick up on their way in. Instead of passing around communion trays, everyone will have their own package to take at the appropriate time during the service.
  • Instead of passing offering plates, you may drop your offering as you leave when the service is dismissed.
  • If you are even slightly sick or feel you have an increased risk of contracting sickness we would encourage you to stay at home on Sunday.
  • Please refrain from hand-shaking, hugs, and the like on Sunday as much as possible.
  • Spread out from other families in the pews as much as possible.
  • There will be no home communion on Sunday morning.
In addition to the above measures for Sunday, we have decided to cancel all non-Sunday-morning events at the church building Until April 1, including Sunday PM and Wednesday PM services as well as all other Bible studies and fellowship activities.

ACJE: Thoughts and Concerns on the Coronavirus

By Gale B. Cowan
Adair Co. Judge Executive

As County Judge Executive here in Adair County the past few days have been a whirlwind of meetings, conference calls, webinars, phone calls, and emails on the coronavirus pandemic. We have talked with local citizens, elected officials, health departments, CDC, Kentucky Emergency management, School personnel, hospital personnel, and the Governor. I think everyone is working together in our state and I want to thank them for that. Decisions are being made that have made people upset and I totally understand that. But in the end, tough decisions must be made.

For the most of us here in Adair County the threat of the COVID-19 virus could be minimal. If you are young and healthy and you contracted the virus, you would more than likely bounce back with barely any time down. But as an elected official it's my job to think of the entire population of our county. I must think about the people with immune disorders, elderly parents and grandparents, small kids with rare disease, and cancer patients that treatment has wiped out their immune system.

Currently, Adair County has no cases we are aware of. I'm asking everyone to do your part to help slow the spread of the disease and help with the panic over our country. Don't always believe what you read on Facebook. Check the facts yourself. The state of Kentucky has a website devoted totally to COVID-19 as well as a hotline to call if you have any questions. The website is www.kycovid19.ky.gov, and the hotline to call if you have any questions is 1-800-722-5725.

I, The Fiscal Court, Emergency Management Director Mike Keltner and all our local elected officials and emergency personnel will continue to stay up to date on the development of the Coronavirus. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to call my office at 270-384-4703 or call the hotline or visit the website provided by the State of Kentucky. -- Gale B. Cowan, Adair Co. Judge Executive

Health Department holds meetings about COVID-19

The Lake Cumberland District Health Department held an afternoon update Thursday, March 12, 2020 to share information for the public about the status of COVID-19 in this area. Ten counties were represented in the tele-meeting with Jelaine Harlow as local host in Columbia. All in attendance at the meetings had the ability to ask questions of officials.

Two imortant things to take away:

- There are no cases, zero cases, of COVID-19 diagnosed in any of our ten county area.

- A "handful of people" are known to have traveled into areas where there could have been exposure and they are being monitored for symptoms.

Health officials continue to stress:

- If you feel sick, stay home except to get medical care,

- Cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze. The virus is spread through droplets where someone has openly sneezed or coughed in close proximity to another individual, or over food that might be served.

- Wash your hands thoroughly or use hand sanitizer with 60% or more alcohol.

Carol Perkins: Changing plans

Previous Column: Carol Perkins: Six reasons to give an adult time out

By Carol Perkins

How much panic is appropriate? How much information do children need about this virus to scare the living daylights out of them? The answers are, "I don't know if I need to panic," and "Only a little." As I was listening to the President and a host of medical professionals a few days ago, I felt a little calmer knowing that the virus targets the elderly with much more intensity, especially those with underlying illnesses. (Not that I'm glad for the elderly.)

Then it occurred to me that I may be considered "elderly," and I have asthma. Lock the doors and bar the windows!

Guy came home from his weekly business trip and talked about being in a big box store in Tennessee. "The toilet paper aisle was empty," he said. "The shelves were full that morning, according to a check out lady." Most people store food for disastrous times, so I wonder what has led to the toilet paper scare? Guy continued, "If we run out, I'll drive to a factory in Owensboro and load up." I decided we could sell rolls out of the back of a truck if times get hard!
