Robert Brown, 83, Dubre, KY, passed away Saturday, March 7, 2020 at his home.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, March 10, 2020 at 1pmCT at McMurtrey Funeral Home, with Gary Richardson officiating. Burial will follow in the Dutch Creek Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday, March 9, 2020, 4-9pm and on Tuesday after 7am until time of services.

Ralph Porter Dowell, 81, Metcalfe County, KY native

Ralph Porter Dowell departed this life Saturday, March 8, 2020 in Adair County, having attained the age of eighty-one years, eleven months and nine days.

Services will be conducted on Wednesday, March 11, 2020 at 2pmCT at the Foster-Toler-Curry Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Greasy Creek Cemetery in the Exie Community of Green County with Military Honors.

Visitation is requested from 5-8 Tuesday March 10, 2020 and after 7am Wednesday until the funeral hour. Officiating will be Bro. Larry Wisdom.

Pallbearers: Donnie Dowell, Joe Dowell, Chris Dowell, Donnie Dowell Jr., Chris Ervin and Chad Dowell.

Honorary Pallbearers: Tom Rowe, Mark Faulkner, Lewis Bernard, and Barkley Hancock.

Kentucky's 2019 annual unemployment rate holds steady

Frankfort, KY - Kentucky's annual unemployment rate was 4.3 percent in 2019, unchanged from 4.3 percent in 2018, while nonfarm employment gained 8,600 jobs, according to the Kentucky Center for Statistics (KYSTATS), an agency of the Kentucky Education and Workforce Development Cabinet.

The U.S. annual unemployment rate dropped to 3.7 percent in 2019 from 3.9 percent in 2018.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics' estimate of the number of employed Kentuckians for 2019 was 1,983,577. This figure is up 14,966 from the 1,968,611 employed in 2018.

LWC Women's Basketball eliminated from MSC Tournament

Bowling Green, KY - A stagnant first 20 minutes ultimately cost Lindsey Wilson women's basketball in a 76-70 loss to Shawnee State (Ohio) in the Mid-South Conference Tournament Semifinals at Bowling Green Arena.

The Blue Raiders (26-6) now wait for the NAIA to announce the national tournament pairings on March 11 to find out their next opponent. The NAIA National Tournament runs March 18-24 in Billings, Montana.

CPD: Meth and Contraband arrests

While patrolling in the White City neighborhood of town on Sunday afternoon, March 8, 2020, Columbia Police Department officers observed a male and female standing outside a vehicle near the corner of West Barbee and Alexander Street who appeared to be under the influence.

Upon making contact and confirming subjects were under the influence, they were placed into custody and found to have narcotics on their person.

LWC Softball to host Union today in doubleheader

After a nine day break in action, the No. 3-ranked Lindsey Wilson softball team returns to the field this afternoon at Marilyn D. Sparks Park, Lindsey Wilson Sports Complex, 928 Russell Road, Columbia, KY, to face Union (KY) in a doubleheader.

The first game is set to begin at 3pmCT, with the second game to follow shortly after the conclusion of game one.

Garon Parrish, 85, Columbia, KY (1934-2020)

Garon Parrish of Columbia passed away on Friday, March 6, 2020, at the T. J. Samson Community Hospital in Glasgow. He was 85 years old.

Funeral services will be held at 11amCT on Tuesday, March 10, 2020, at the Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home, 210 Greensburg St., Columbia, KY, with Rev. Ronnie Dooley officiating. Burial will follow in the Roach Cemetery.

Visitation will be on Monday from 4pmCT until 8pmCT at the funeral home, and will continue on Tuesday morning until time for the service.

Family and friends gather to celebrate 45th anniversary

The 45th wedding anniversary of Dick and Linda Fitzpatrick of Columbia was celebrated with family, church family and friends Sunday, March 1, 2020 at the Good Shepherd Catholic Church.

The couple renewed their vows spoken 45 years ago on that date in the church at Western Kentucky University.

Songs were led by Dick - "I Have Loved You" and "Make Me A Channel Of Your Peace". Prayer, directing the sharing of vows and giving of rings, and blessing was by Fr. Joseph. Their sons Shawn and Eric escorted Linda down the aisle. Reading from The Book of Ruth by daughter-in-law Ashley. Reading from the First Letter of Paul in the Corinthians was by daughter-in-law Jennifer.

The service was followed by a meal, toasts/roasts and cutting of the wedding cake.

It's currently 48F at the Adair County Mesonet station. It should be mostly cloudy today, with a high near 68F. South wind 8 to 16 mph, with gusts as high as 36 mph.

Showers will arrive tonight after 8pmCT. Expect an overnight low around 56F, with south wind 11 to 16 mph, gusting as high as 30 mph.

Showers will continue on Tuesday, with the possibility of a thunderstorm. Tuesday's high will be near 64F. South wind 10 to 16 mph becoming west in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 30 mph.

Showers remain likely on Tuesday night, mainly before 8pmCT. Otherwise it will be mostly cloudy, with an overnight low around 46F. Northwest wind 5 to 8 mph becoming calm in the evening.

ACSO: Two arrested for trafficking methamphetamine

On 3-7-20 at 10:51pm while investigating a complaint received, K-9 Deputy Josh Durbin arrested George Tommy Polston, 58, of Columbia, and Nicole Myers, 47, of Jamestown for Trafficking In a Controlled Substance 1st degree Methamphetamine and Possession of Marijuana.

The arrest took place approximately 7 miles south of Columbia, KY.ACSO: Sheriffs Office arrests two for trafficking methamphetamine.

A quantity of methamphetamine consistent with the illegal sale or distribution was seized, along with marijuana, by the Sheriffs Office. ACSO: Sheriffs Office arrests two for trafficking methamphetamine.

Both were lodged in the Adair County Regional Jail.  The Sheriffs Office was assisted by Kentucky State Police.

Some Early History of Cane Valley, part 1

“Cane Valley, Then and Now—I will give a short history of Cane Valley as it was in 1855 and as it is today... In 1855 the writer had a post office established and gave it the name Cane Valley and had himself appointed postmaster. At that time there was not a post office between Columbia and Campbellsville, a distance of 20 miles. Farmers were compelled to ride ten and twelve miles for their mail. Now there are five post offices immediately on the pike between the two towns. In 1855 there was but one storehouse and that owned by my father, J.F. Bridgewater, his dwelling and the cabins for his slaves, 30 in number, were all the houses in Cane Valley at that time. There were ten persons in my father's family and they and his slaves constituted the population.

ACSO: Sheriffs office recovers stolen property, Russell County man arrested

    On 3-7-20 at 8:15 the Adair County Sheriffs Office received a complaint of a stolen vehicle from Russell County.  Sheriff Brockman located the suspect in the case at a local business in the limits of Columbia. He had the keys to stolen vehicle, however it was not at the location, the vehicle being a 2004 Buick. 

    After further investigation Deputy Josh Durbin located the vehicle off of south 55 in the Glensfork  area. In addition to locating the vehicle, an ATV and trailer that had been stolen were also recovered.
