Letter: Watch out for Satellite Upgrade Scam

Maury Lewis writes:
I received a phone call from someone that said they were with Dish and Dish was changing satellites and they needed me to turn my TV on so they could see if my TV would work with the new satellite. I told them my TV was on and they said good don't hang up we will tell you when we are through, I said how do I know if this just isn't a scam and he got very nervous-sounding telling it wasn't a scam.

I hung up and called Dish and they said they had nothing like that it is a scam.
Maury, thanks for writing. We found reports of this occurring in Idaho, Illinois, Kentucky, and Florida. A news story about this type of scam is here: daily-journal.com.

By Crystal Staley/Lisa Lamb

Frankfort, KY - Today, Gov. Andy Beshear provided an update on the status of his executive order that automatically restored the right to vote to many Kentuckians previously denied this right and unveiled a website to help Kentuckians determine if they qualify.

The website, CivilRightsRestoration.ky.gov, features a searchable database for Kentuckians to find out if their rights have been restored. If so, they are eligible to register to vote immediately.

Gov. Beshear signed an executive order Dec. 12, 2019, his third day in office, restoring the rights to vote and hold public office to Kentuckians who were convicted of most non-violent felonies under Kentucky law and who have repaid their debt to society by completing their sentences.

Opinion: Your Donation, Your Community, Our Leaders

Commentary by Kentucky 4-H President Gloria Bolin, Kentucky FFA President Haley Nelson, and Kentucky Commissioner of Agriculture Dr. Ryan Quarles

Frankfort, KY - - "Your Donation, Your Community, Our Leaders." In the months of February and March, Kentuckians across the Commonwealth will make their annual trek down to their county clerk's office to renew farm license plates, or as members of Kentucky's agricultural community call them "ag tags." When farm families visit with their county clerk this year, we hope you consider making a voluntary $10 donation to the Kentucky Ag Tag Fund to invest back in our communities and in our leaders.

Ag Tag donations are equally divided among Kentucky 4-H, Kentucky FFA, and the Kentucky Department of Agriculture (KDA) for youth development and promotional programs. As leaders of those respective organizations, we can personally attest to how each of organization uses the dollars to promote the future of Kentucky agriculture and invest in future leaders.

Leaders in Action at ACES!

By Alice Curry, Technology Teacher & STC
Adair County Elementary School

Books inspire us every day and this was the case in Mrs. Amanda Webster's classroom for 5th grade student, Harli Polk. "I read a book about how animals in shelters or abused homes don't get the love that our pets do," said Harli. This put her into action!

Harli quickly passed a note to her friend, Dakota Espinoza which stated that she had an idea. Harli wanted the students at Adair County Elementary to bring in items for the Green River Animal Shelter. Dakota was equally excited about Harli's idea. The two friends quickly enlisted help with fellow classmates, Kendyl Burton, Isaac Hawkins, and Anika Jennings who were excited about the project. The five friends formulated a plan and presented it to Mrs. Brown, ACES Principal.

Their plan was to promote the project and give a reward to the homeroom who brought in the most items for the shelter. When presented to Mrs. Brown, she enthusiastically gave the students permission to proceed. "I was so impressed with their generous spirit," said Mrs. Brown.

Tornado safety tips

From Mike Keltner, Director
Adair County Emergency Management

There will be a Statewide Tornado Drill today, March 4, 2020, at 9:07amCT. Sirens will sound and the warning WILL set off NOAA Weather Radios but will NOT set be transmitted as Wireless Emergency Alert messages on cell phones.
  • A Tornado Watch means "be prepared"
  • A Tornado Warning or Tornado Emergency means "take action now!"
If there is a tornado watch, pay extra close attention to the weather and be ready to act, because tornadoes are possible. If there is a tornado warning, find shelter immediately, and move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building, because a tornado is occurring or will shortly. Avoid windows and cover your head to protect yourself from flying debris. Taking action early can help save lives!
