Senate passes new school safety bill

By Jim Hannah, LRC

Frankfort, KY - A measure that would add to major school safety legislation that passed into law last year advanced to the state House of Representatives today.

The measure, known as Senate Bill 8, would require school resource officers (SROs) to be armed with a gun.

"If we are protected by those who are sworn law enforcement officers with a firearm, would we not want the same for our children in Kentucky public schools?" sponsor Sen. Max Wise, R-Campbellsville, said in reference to the state police who provide security for the General Assembly. "It is easy for us here to get caught up in discussions that center around guns ... but to not allow a sworn law enforcement officer the ability to carry a gun is limiting. They need to be equipped to be able to do their job."

The bill adds to the 2019 School Safety and Resiliency Act, catalyzed by the Marshall County High School shooting. Sen. Danny Carroll, R-Paducah, who district includes the high school, stood to express his appreciation for SB 8.

New project manager, more locations for REAL ID

Dennis Loy, Adair County Circuit Clerk, sends the following information on the continued rollout of REAL ID in Kentucky ahead of the October 1 deadline.

Frankfort, KY - Despite Kentucky not currently meeting the federal REAL ID standards, the Beshear administration is committed to implementing the initiative. On Wednesday, Gov. Beshear and Secretary Gray announced a new REAL ID project manager and two more office locations, Somerset and Paducah, in addition to previously announced Frankfort and Bowling Green offices. For now, the Frankfort office is the location best equipped to serve all counties.

"For years, there have been a lot of changes and uncertainty surrounding REAL ID - the federal ID requirements to board flights, enter a military base or visit some federal buildings, but that uncertainty has to end on Oct. 1," Gov. Beshear said. "My administration is working tirelessly to catch our state up and bring us into compliance with the federal requirements. We must continue to act swiftly so all our families are served."

Gov. Beshear announced that Sarah Jackson of Frankfort will serve as the new REAL ID project manager. Recognizing the importance of this initiative to tens of thousands of Kentuckians, Gov. Beshear and Secretary Gray elevated the project manager to serve in the Office of Secretary reporting directly to Gray.

Cawood Ledford remembered fondly ahead of HOF induction

By Jerry Tipton, Lexington Herald-Leader

The recent news that Cawood Ledford will be inducted posthumously into the National Sports Media Association Hall of Fame later this year prompted an immediate reaction. Something like: Huh? Wasn't he already in that Hall of Fame? At the start of a telephone conversation Thursday, that reaction was bounced off Dave Goren, the executive director of the NSMA. "Well, good question," he said. "I was a little surprised myself."

Kentucky Color: 10-6 at Checker House

By Billy Joe Fudge

I too remember all the characters gathered at the Checker Room including Mr. Willie Overstreet and Mr. Amos Fox. I will try to explain my depth of experience at the Checker Room even though I could claim not one bit of expertise at checkers, even though I did beat my friend and checker guru, Jimmy Reliford, one, yes and only one game. That however, is a story for a different day. You might remind me to scribble that one down for you in the future.

So back in those days, the life of a Forest Ranger could be fairly intense involving weeks on end with nary a day off except to maybe attend a funeral or carry a loved one to the doctor. Many of those weeks for us South Central District guys and gals could be spent about anywhere around these parts, stretching from the Tennessee line to the Kentucky River and from the Barrens to Virginia. Similarly or conversely, depending upon how you might look at it, many hours could be spent 10-6 which meant "busy-standing by unless urgent!"

The ten code, 10-6 was used to save both vehicle fuel and human energy, while being in radio contact in case of an emergency which in this case would be the report of a fire. So and since my friend Joe Johnson was the Adair County Seasonal Ranger/Fire Plow Operator between checker games; I would find myself 10-6 at the Checker House between stints at "chasing smokes" and "fire fighting." I remember all the guys and even the occasional Rook game which drew the ire of the checker purists in the crowd.

The good hearted banter, the occasional sore loser, the faux threats of making one "look down the business end of my Ol' Nitro Hunter," challenges to one's manhood, etc. still bring cheer to my heart and warmth to my soul.
