Quarles urges college students to apply for 2020 KDA internships

Applications must be postmarked no later than December 16. Interns can gain valuable experience to boost their careers.

By Sean Southard

Frankfort, KY - Agriculture Commissioner Ryan Quarles encourages Kentucky college students seeking a career in agriculture or government to apply for positions in the Kentucky Department of Agriculture's (KDA's) internship program for the summer of 2020.

"A KDA internship gives a young person the opportunity to work alongside department employees and serve the citizens of the Commonwealth," Commissioner Quarles said. "Our past interns used their experience at the department to launch careers in agriculture or an ag-related field. Some have even come back to the KDA to enter public service. If you are a college student with an interest in an agricultural career, we look forward to reviewing your application."

In addition to agriculture, KDA interns may work in education, computer science, marketing, communications, pre-law, and other fields. Internships will run from June to August.

A question for the ages

By JIM

I blush at Billy Joe Fudge's kind comments. Sunday's episode of "But meanwhile, back in The Shire..." was particularly fun to put together.

For years now, a Russell County friend and I have quietly but diligently worked to keep as many of the "old" words and phrases as possible before the public, including such rusty, dusty gems as commodious, pestiferous, fancy groceries (a personal favorite), and, of course, slather, in its myriad forms.

Still, truth-in-commenting requires divulgence that Mr. Fudge's food-related comment about slathering kept me up the better part of last night as a question for the ages swirled about in the deep vacuum of my cranial cavity: Is it possible to over-slather a biscuit with butter? --JIM

ISP at LWC: Utilizing our house to the fullest

By Sabine Eastham

A year and a half ago, a dream came true - the International Student Programs at the Lindsey Wilson College moved into a house on campus at 304 Lindsey Wilson Street. We had high hopes for the potential use of our new house, and it has materialized.

Our students have been utilizing the house for casual gatherings, ESL classes, celebrations and educational showcases, finding a quiet place to study, a place where they can relax, finding homemade treats, gatherings around the fire pit outside, celebrating the holidays and often utilizing the kitchen to cook their own food and to share a meal together. Students from different countries took turns to cook for students from other countries and taste each other's food. Many U.S. students meet our visitors from other countries and cultures at the "ISP HOUSE".

Thanksgiving is approaching - a time to give thanks and appreciate things. We are truly blessed and thankful for being able to offer this and more to our international students as they bring so much to this campus and community.

Free Service helps KY teens stop vaping, smoking

By Christina Dettman/Jordan Rowe

Frankfort, KY - The Kentucky Department for Public Health (DPH) within the Cabinet for Health and Family Services (CHFS) is launching a free service aimed at helping teens quit vaping, smoking, and using other tobacco products. The service is called My Life, My Quit and went live across the state on Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2019.

Teenagers who want to stop using e-cigarettes or other tobacco products can text or call the toll-free My Life, My Quit number: 1-855-891-9989. They will then be connected to a "quit coach" who will provide, free, confidential, real-time support. Each teen can get five sessions of personalized support through live texting, phone, or online chat.

The goal of the My Life, My Quit coaching sessions is for the teen to build a plan to quit tobacco. The quit coach will help them develop strategies to cope with stress, address symptoms of withdrawal, and navigate social situations.

"We know how difficult it is for young people to find effective help quitting tobacco products, especially help that is tailored just for them," said the Kentucky Department for Public Health's Elizabeth Anderson-Hoagland. "But we also know that with help and support, young people can successfully quit tobacco, including vaping."
