October 20, 1977 Around Adair with Ed Waggener The article below first appeared in the October 20, 1977 issue of the Daily Statesman. It was devoted entirely to Ernest Rainwater's giant pumpkin, and the accompanying photo went on to attract the attention of Bob Hill at the Courier-Journal, as noted in the October 21, 1977 Around Adair with Ed Waggener. --Pen By Ed Waggener Ernest Rainwater, Route 1, Knifley, has raised the biggest pumpkin ever seen in these parts. The pumpkin weighs 185 pounds, and measures 28 inches in diameter and stands 24 1/2 inches tall. Rainwater isn't claiming the pumpkin is any kind of a record, but, as a basis for comparison, he points out that Kentucky Agriculture Commissioner Tom Harris took a Kentucky pumpkin which weighed 122 pounds to a contest in Pennsylvania and it came in eighth in the contest. Rainwater is going to give the pumpkin to his daughter, Glenda James Beard, a lawyer in Attorney General Bob Stephens' office in Frankfort. Flatwoods' Rosenwald School Renovation and Work Day 3 By Mike Watson The Flatwoods School sits just off highway 61, south of Columbia. Sheltered by trees and adjacent to Santa Fee church, it is a well-kept secret of local history and Adair's educational past. It is one of the few one-room schools still standing in Adair County that has not been radically changed in appearance for other purposes. It is also the only one of five Rosenwald Schools in this county still standing, and structurally is considered one of the best preserved in the State. Earlier this year Rodney and Donna White and Sammy Hughes, all of Columbia, instituted the project to restore and to preserve this piece of history. With the help of the area's hardest working volunteer group of faithful men, the 'Band of Brothers' under the direction of project manager Bobby Morrison, this renovation has progressed. September 21st was designated as a community day-of-giving and various projects across town and county were well underway on this hot Saturday. The Flatwoods crew began assembling before seven a.m. and continued to ebb and flow all day, the last workers exiting after 3 p.m. October 5th was a second day of concentrated effort on behalf of the school. Many of the same volunteers, and a few new faces, showed up for the benefit of the school. October 19th was the third day devoted to work at Flatwoods School. A core of workers, most Band of Brothers members came out to do one more organized day of restoration. The project was and is nearing completion, at least for this year. The DFI and FDIC have been closely monitoring Louisa Community Bank and determined that the bank was critically undercapitalized. Earlier this year, both regulatory agencies notified the institution of its capital designation and provided time for the bank to either raise capital or locate an acquisition partner.
