Commentary: Engine Brake Ordinance for Columbia By Joe & Della Hare 304 Jamestown St. As residents of Jamestown Street in Columbia, we have a noise issue that most streets do not have and that is the noise from the Engine Brakes of air brake equipped trucks. I will say that this not a big issue with most of the local trucks. The most noise comes from out of town trucks and the worst of all are the ones that haul wood chips. We feel it would be beneficial if the City of Columbia would enact a "No Engine Brake" ordinance. First would be the reduction of noise, and I am aware that Jamestown and Burkesville Streets are the locations most affected by this noise. Another possible benefit for our town could be that some of these trucks that are coming through town might then use the bypass, should this be enacted and enforced. This would help to lessen the truck congestion around the square. Fewer trucks, fewer chances of an accident, such as has happened in the past. We are also aware that Jamestown Hill is steep enough to warrant the use of engine brakes but with there being a 35 MPH speed limit, and as short as the hill is this should not be a problem, as we see many, many trucks go over the hill safely with out using engine brakes. We are aware of three other towns with this kind of ordinance, (I am sure there are more). They are Russellville, Brownsville and Carrollton. We request that the Mayor and City Council act on this matter, as this is something that will benefit our town with the only cost of a few signs. 2019-10-20 09:57:09 | Comments | Printable version
October 14, 1977 Around Adair with Ed Waggener This article first appeared in the October 14, 1977 issue of the Daily Statesman. Topics included the Farmers Home Administration (FmHA at Wikipedia), the first anniversary of the Burger Queen, and the way that various mayors of Christine planned to show their solidarity with Vester after a recent case of sign-thievery. --Pen By Ed Waggener I'm impressed I have to admit I am impressed with the efficiency of the FmHA organization. The local agency came through for the hospital loan application beautifully. Dan Propes, the county office supervisor, streamlined the application procedure so that the forms were ready to go with the least agony for the Adair County Hospital District. Propes' co-workers in the office are Marilyn Livesay, county office assistant, and Carolyn Cooksey, secretary. District Director here, too The District Director, V.T. Yarberry, is headquartered in the Columbia office, too. Yarberry works in 13 southern Kentucky counties from Columbia. The district includes, besides Adair, Warren, Simpson, Allen, Metcalfe, Monroe, Cumberland, Barren, Clinton, Russell, Taylor, Green, and Hart Counties. If the rest of the government were run the way Yarberry's district office is, we wouldn't hear much complaining. Bevin celebrates win in lawsuit against HHS Mandate The federal rule could have forced physicians to perform procedures in violation of their religious beliefs and professional opinions. By Nicole Burton Frankfort, KY - Gov. Matt Bevin this week applauded a United States District Court for declaring unlawful a U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) regulation that redefined discrimination on the basis of "sex" to include "gender identity" and "termination of pregnancy." The federal rule would have forced doctors to perform operations and abortions, even if they believed the procedures were not in the best interests of their patients, or violated their deeply held religious beliefs. Judge Reed O'Connor of the U.S. District Court for Northern District of Texas ruled that the Obama-era HHS enacted the new rule without legal authority under the Administrative Procedure Act, and that it infringed on the rights of health care providers under the 1993 Religious Freedom Restoration Act. Beshear: Company flooded KY with opioids Unsealed court records show Manchester, KY, a town of about 1,400 residents, received 9,500 doses of oxycodone per month. By Crystal Staley/Kenneth Mansfield Frankfort, KY - A judge has agreed with a request from Attorney General Andy Beshear to unseal court documents that reveal specific data on how one opioid manufacturer flooded the state with nearly 900 million dosage units of opioids over a six-year period. Beshear filed a motion in Madison Circuit Court in August to unseal previously redacted information in his complaint against Missouri-based manufacturer Mallinckrodt. A judge entered the order this week. The information was originally sealed to comply with subpoena procedure employed in the investigation and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration database, which was released to the public this summer following a federal opioid case in Ohio.
