WKU going smoke/tobacco-free on January 1, 2020 By Bob Skipper Bowling Green, KY - Western Kentucky University will become a tobacco-free, smoke-free campus beginning Jan. 1, 2020. The policy prohibits the use of all tobacco and vaping products on all properties that are owned, operated, leased, occupied or controlled by WKU. WKU has resources in place for those of the campus community who want to stop using tobacco and related products and will continue to expand cessation programs. KSP: One injured in a two vehicle collision By Tpr. Nick Hale Edmonton, KY - Trooper Jonathan Paull is investigating a collision that occurred Saturday, October 12, 2019 at approximately 3:59pmCT on Glasgow Rd at the intersection of Wisdom Rd. located 5 miles west of Edmonton. Tyra Cross, age 34 of Gamaliel, was operating a 2003 Chevy van eastbound on Wisdom Rd attempting to turn onto Glasgow Rd when she failed to see a 2002 Harley Davidson Motorcycle traveling westbound. As Cross turned onto Glasgow Rd she struck the motorcycle, operated by 52-year-old Darrell Stephens of Edmonton. Cross was wearing a seatbelt and was not injured. Stephens was not wearing a helmet and was airlifted from the scene to Vanderbilt Hospital in Tennessee, where he is listed in critical condition. CU and Isaah House open up new welding program The Isaiah House Treatment Centers in conjunction with the Virginia Ponser Technology Training Center will be hosting a grand opening ceremony on Friday, October 18, 2019 to celebrate the launch of welding classes on the Isaiah House Willisburg Campus. The ceremony will begin at 10amCT/11amET at the Mike Mullins Vocational Center, located on the Isaiah House Willisburg Campus. The Isaiah House Welding Program is a partnership between Campbellsville University and Isaiah House Treatment Centers, providing the opportunity for men to receive job skills training and take classes to become a certified welder. Isaiah House was recently named a satellite location of Campbellsville University by the U.S. Department of Education, the first treatment center in the U.S. to earn such distinction. National Teen Driver Safety Week is October 20-26 Before handing over the keys, make sure your teen knows the rules By Jordan Smith Frankfort, KY - The Kentucky Office of Highway Safety (KOHS) is joining the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) during National Teen Driver Safety Week, October 20-26, to help empower parents to talk with their young drivers about the importance of driving safely. "Parents have a strong influence on their teens, even as they grow older and become more independent," said Acting KOHS Executive Director Jason Siwula. "Because of their lack of experience, teen drivers are a potential danger to themselves and to other drivers, which is why it is so important that parents take time to discuss safe driving practices with their teens." According to NHTSA, motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for teens between the ages of 15-18 in the United States. Per mile driven, teens are involved in three times as many fatal crashes as all other drivers.
