Columbia City Council meeting - October Report

Covered by Mitzi Bault

After passionate discussion on both sides of the Zoning issue of 511 Burkesville Street, Mayor Pamela Hoots was forced to break the City Council's three-three tie vote. That done, the City made what is a very rare disagreement with Planning & Zoning recommendations which allows for the cleared property to be used as a business.

Property owner Dustin Brockman and his family and business supporters drew an almost visible sigh of relief after making three meetings speaking out to defend his automotive business location staying within the City, moving from Jamestown Street to Burkesville Street.

Letter: Proud of giving spirit in Columbia

Troy Grider writes:
I just wanted to say that I appreciate what Bank of Columbia and their employees are doing to help in the community. Of course, I had heard about the donation to the Jaycees for the fairgrounds, but I am very thankful that you guys would take consideration to provide for the handicap ramp at the food pantry.

I am glad to hear about these and want to encourage you and others in every way, that even the 'small' things make a big difference in our community and especially to help those who may not be able to help themselves!

I am proud of you guys, proud to call Columbia my home, and am glad that there are many people in our community who work hard to improve the lives of others!

Sincerely,
--Troy H. Grider

Around 75 people enjoyed 13th annual Silent City event

By Mike Watson

The 13th Annual Silent City Tour went off without the proverbial 'hitch' Monday evening. There was fear that rain would cause a shift of the reenactments to the library, but as time neared, the sun peeked through the clouds, and the event proceeded as planned.

The audience wandered across the old section of the Columbia Cemetery to hear four of the six presentations, the final two in the first expansion of the original cemetery.

Cook Wild Kentucky: How to Prepare Wild Game

By Sean Southard

Frankfort, KY - The Kentucky Department of Agriculture (KDA) and the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources are teaming up to raise awareness about "Cook Wild Kentucky," a new recipe card series from the University of Kentucky's (UK) College of Agriculture, Food and Environment aimed at educating Kentuckians on how to prepare wild game.

"It is an unfortunate reality that 1 in 6 Kentuckians is food insecure, and at the Kentucky Department of Agriculture, we started the Kentucky Hunger Initiative to find new and engaging ways to combat hunger," Agriculture Commissioner Ryan Quarles said. "The Cook Wild Kentucky program fits in perfectly with the Kentucky Hunger Initiative. We are excited to join our friends at the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources, the University of Kentucky's Nutrition Education Program, Feeding Kentucky, and Kentucky Hunters for the Hungry to help educate folks on how they can cook up delicious meals using Kentucky game."

Cook Wild Kentucky is a partnership of the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources, the UK Cooperative Extension Service, Kentucky Hunters for the Hungry, and Feeding Kentucky.

Letter: A fitting tribute

Victoria Pike writes:
What a nice tribute to three people that did so much in their community. Cynthia, Ivy, and Willard did what many more should. They got involved and made a difference.

I know for a fact that Miss Cynthia gave her all up to the end. We attended Fiscal Court meeting the night before she got sick and another meeting the night before that. She was very passionate about her work at the food pantry. She wanted to do all she could to see that the children of Adair County didn't go to bed hungry. Her shoes will be difficult to fill. And on occasion those shoes didn't match.

On one occasion she was in such a rush to get to a Fiscal Court meeting that those shoes didn't match and that was the big story Ed reported from that meeting. She was indeed a breath of fresh air and is greatly missed by her family and friends. --Victoria
