Kentucky Color: Drought of September 2019

By Billy Joe Fudge

Over the years I've explained thousands of times that a tree's root system extends to a tree's drip line. In other words, if a tree's crown were a giant umbrella, the drip line would be where the rain would be running off onto the ground.

However, the current Drought of September 2019 gives us the unique opportunity to peer beneath the ground, so to speak, and see the exact location of our tree's root systems. As the lone Sugar Maple which welcomes all visitors to Homeplace on Green River shows; where the green grass begins is where the tree's root system ends.

If you decide to water or feed your trees, this would be the location of maximum absorption for both.

Fall Wildfire Hazard Season begins October 1

Adair County has been under a burn ban since September 19, 20199

By John Mura/Robin Hartman

Frankfort, KY - October 1 is the beginning of the Fall Wildfire Hazard Season, bringing burning restrictions to communities not already under a local burn ban.

The Commonwealth's 6am to 6pm Burning Law (KRS149.400) prohibits burning before 6pm local time if the fire is in, or within 150 feet of, woodland, brushland or fields containing dry grass or other flammable materials.

Officials with the Kentucky Division of Forestry (KDF) remind everyone to be careful with outdoor fire any time of the year, but especially during the wildfire seasons when the risk of a fire escaping is greatest. If a fire does escape, immediately contact the nearest Division of Forestry field office or local fire department.
