Kentucky's first School Security Marshal is on the job

By Valarie Honeycutt Spears, Lexington Herald-Leader

Just as a fire marshal works to make sure that buildings are less likely to burn, Kentucky's first state school security marshal's job is to make sure that kids are protected at school.

The 12 compliance officers and two supervisors that the new marshal Ben Wilcox is in the process of hiring will start talking to educators about what's required by a new state law beginning in January. By the 2020-21 school year, the compliance officers will be making unannounced visits to 1,435 Kentucky school buildings with a 66-point checklist.

Flatwoods' Rosenwald School Renovation and Work Day

By Mike Watson

The Flatwoods School sits just off highway 61, south of Columbia. Sheltered by trees and adjacent to Santa Fee church, it is a well-kept secret of local history and Adair's educational past. It is one of the few one-room schools still standing in Adair County that has not been radically changed in appearance for other purposes. It is also the only one of five Rosenwald Schools in this county still standing, and structurally is considered one of the best preserved in the State.

Earlier this year Rodney and Donna White and Sammy Hughes, all of Columbia, instituted the project to restore and to preserve this piece of history. A small committee was formed to move forward, and throughout the summer months plans were made. With the help of the area's hardest working volunteer groups of faithful men, the 'Band of Brothers' under the direction of project manager Bobby Morrison, this renovation has commenced.

September 21st was designated as a community day-of-giving and various projects across town and county were well underway on this hot Saturday. The Flatwoods crew began assembling before seven a.m. and continued to ebb and flow all day, the last workers exiting after 3 p.m.

Letter: The difficulty of Field identification

Comments re article 106259 Letter Calling Mike Watson photo ID needed

By Mike Watson

Greetings to Betty Ann Wells! I cannot confirm the photograph is that of Dr. Elijah Creel Field. I have never been able to identify any of the Field line in a photo of any type, except for a few of the progeny in Texas in later years. Dr. Elijah was a practicing physician, along with his brother Dr. Samuel Brents Field, in Adair and surrounding counties for many years.

I would be interested in learning more about his untimely demise, only knowing he disappeared from this place shortly after the War. His siblings lived here a few more years before dying of natural causes.
