Septemer 16, 1977 Around Adair with Ed Waggener This article first appeared in the September 16, 1977 issue of the Daily Statesman. Topics included hedgeapples, an argument for a traffic light on Jamestown Street that would probably have saved Dad 5 minutes on his morning commute to the newspaper office, a renovation of the Circle R, exploration of natural gas resources in the county, a plan for a bypass around town, and a too-good-to-be-true price on Kickapoo Joy Juice at Carl's Locker and Market. --Pen By Ed Waggener If I get bit by a spider, it's my own darned fault: I forgot to put my hedgeapples out and yesterday morning a big ugly one almost dropped on my back as I ran through its web. But, fool that I was, I didn't put out hedgeapples, as Emma Woody has warned everybody to do. Some are foolish, but others are wise However, George Keltner has not been bitten by spiders, and I suspect that soon he will not be plagued with crickets. Keltner and his wife were journeying toward Lexington the other day and he spotted a big hedgeapple tree on the banks of the Kentucky River. He startled his wife, Bobbie, when he stopped the car to pick them and I suspect passers-by were startled as well. "But," he said, "I decided to experiment to see if hedgeapples really do keep spiders away." Barren holds first hot air balloon festival By Tiffany Kessler The first Groove and Glow hot air balloon festival was held Saturday night, September 21, 2019, at the Glasgow Municipal Airport. Sponsored and supported by T.J. Sampson Hospital, Glasgow City Police Department, Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, and several other entities, the event had a larger turnout than anyone was expecting. Those attending were treated to free tethered hot air balloon rides, bouncy houses, rock walls to climb, vintage aircraft, live music, and lots of freebies from local businesses. A multitude of food trucks were ready to feed the masses. At only 35 miles from Adair County, it made for a great day trip. 2019-09-22 06:43:39 | Comments | Printable version

Mosby Ridge Road Bridge is an important connector Comments re photo 85178 Old Iron Bridge in Metcalfe Co By Billy Joe Fudge Thank you Tiffany for preserving the image of this iconic landmark for posterity's sake! This is the Mosby Ridge Road Bridge and to many it carries much historic symbolism. The dry creek bed to which you refer is East Fork of the Little Barren River. Just downstream halfway between the bridge and Highway 80, Red Lick Creek joins up with East Fork and then about 300 yards downstream from East Fork's crossing beneath Highway 80, Leatherwood Creek empties into East Fork. East Fork heads up in the hills about halfway between Subtle and Breeding. Red Lick heads up just behind Chestnut Grove Church and Leatherwood begins about 200 yards West of the intersection of the Sparksville School building. Together these three drain the Western Slope of the Sparksville-Breeding Highlands, which sports the highest elevations in Adair County and are a part of the Green River Watershed.
