Big Business on the River

By Mike Watson

Creelsboro, Russell County, on the Cumberland River, was jumping with activity once again on Saturday, September 14th. Celebrate Creelsboro was a heralded event, long in the making. Visitors from near and far, some traveling more than one hundred miles one-way, came to see the town again, some perhaps for the first time.

The town of 'Creelsborough' was founded in 1809 for business purposes by Elijah and Elza "Elzey" Creel, merchant brothers. The Creels, sons of an early settler of Green and Adair Counties, were early businessmen in Greensburg and later in Columbia. The current Grissom-Martin Funeral Home in Columbia was built by Elijah Creel about 1818, and was long known as the Creel-Page House.

Creelsboro and the Cumberland: A Living History, an excellent documentary premiered at the Creelsboro Nazarene Church on Saturday, with three screenings during the day.

September 15, 1977 Around Adair with Ed Waggener

This article first appeared in the September 15, 1977 issue of the Daily Statesman. Topics included Olin Loy's squirrel soup, memories of grocery store long-arms, Candidate Bert Janes, and the non-retirement of Buell Collins. --Pen

Terrible things are happening in the varmint world. K.I. Riddle, a proper citizen of the fashionable College Park area, suffered 11 stings when he ran over a yellow jacket while mowing the yard. It hurt, he says, but no worse than the laughter which greeted when he fled into the kitchen to escape the critters. Instead of sympathy, his wife Maxine and son Steve doubled up at the mirth in the flight. "I guess," he told them, "that when they lay me out you two will pass by laughing."

Steve Riddle did help in the revenge, burning out the yellow jackets while K.I. stood a safe, but hollering distance, away.

It was no easier for Mr. McGowan
Mr. Riddle's plight was no more pitiful than that of Mr. James R. McGowan, a proper citizen of the fashionable (all Columbia neighborhoods are fashionable) Green Hills.

Letter: When the footbridge at Sulphur Well broke

Pat Williams Fraley writes:
When my dad, Oakley Williams, was a young man, this was a walking bridge over the river. One day when he and a friend were walking across the bridge to go to the dance on the other side. The bridge broke, and they landed in the river. Thank God there was not a lot of water, although it covered the rocks. They swam out. --Patty
